One for all and all for one: an exploratory study on the aspects that support collaboration in game jams
game jams, game development, collaboration, brokering.
Games have been used in numerous contexts, from entertainment and diffusion of knowledge to practices in health and treatment of diseases. Despite this, the creation of digital games remains a complex task and requires the involvement of several experts. Within this scenario, Game Jams consist of events where the participants, called jammers, develop functional game prototypes in a collaborative way and with thematic and time constraints. Although such events have grown in popularity, there is still little evidence in the scientific literature on how collaboration occurs in this type of event, and especially, what are the factors that facilitate such collaboration. This study aims to understand how collaboration brokering adds value to the development process in a game jam. For this, a study was conducted during the Global Game Jam 2018. Our findings describe the main practices during the event and what strategies are used by the teams in order to facilitate the collaboration. In addition, mentors and game designers are recognized as the main task coordinators, acting as brokers in the collaboration among the jam participants. This study contributes to understand and characterize the work of multidisciplinary teams through game jams, also suggesting practices that support the mediation of collaboration and interaction between game jams participants. Such techniques could be used in similar contexts such as industry and education to facilitate collaboration between teams.
