Hip-hop; Peripheral youth; Rap battles; Musical formation.
This work aims to present perspectives on music, territory, and sociopolitical formation based on a study of the formative dimension of hip-hop. This master's research aims to investigate the formative-musical dimension of a rap battle in the city of Natal, Brazil, from the perspective of three young people involved in this context. Therefore, this text presents the concepts of musical worlds (Finnegan, 1989) and Musicking (Small, 1998), understanding music as a situated and relational action, among other theoretical approaches, with a view to articulating discussions in the fields of education and music with the dynamics of the hip-hop movement and the relationships of belonging of young people from peripheral areas. The methodology consists of qualitative research, using the ethnographic case study method (Larchert, 2017) and anchored in the perspective of street ethnography (Rocha; Eckert, 2003). Data collection and production tools include participant observation, field diary, documentary research, audiovisual recordings, and semi-structured interviews. This study aims to explore emerging perspectives on the interrelationship between music, territory, and sociopolitical formation, focusing on the formative dimension of cultural manifestations, especially in the context of rap battles in Natal, Brazil.
