SUMMARY:

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by difficulties in
communication and social interaction, as well as restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior (APA,
2022). Considering that teachers frequently observe early signs of the disorder in the school
environment, it becomes relevant to investigate instruments that support their identification. This
study, grounded in historical-cultural neuropsychology, aims to analyze how teachers identify
suggestive signs of ASD Level 1, their knowledge about this condition, and the trajectory between the
identification of these signs and referrals for diagnostic evaluation. This is a mixed-methods study.
The first phase, quantitative in nature, will involve teachers from public and private schools in Natal completing the Screening Scale for the Identification of Autism Signs for Teachers (TEA-Prof), as well as a questionnaire assessing their knowledge of ASD Level 1. The second phase, qualitative in nature, will be based on thematic content analysis (Bardin, 2016), drawing on documentary analysis of school, family, and public policy contexts. The study seeks to understand how teachers perceive and interpret behaviors suggestive of ASD Level 1. The interpretation of results will be guided by the assumptions of neuropsychology based on the historical-cultural theory of Vygotsky (1978) and Luria (1986), which conceptualizes development as a socially mediated process. It is also expected to analyze the role of sociocultural factors, gender, and social class in shaping the visibility of these signs. The findings aim to contribute to the improvement of teacher training and to the critical use of screening instruments, strengthening inclusive and socially contextualized practices within the school environment.
