SUMMARY:

Graduate education in Brazil has experienced significant growth in recent decades. Although this expansion represents an important advancement in scientific training, it has also been accompanied by increasing academic demands, creating a context characterized by high pressure, competitiveness, and instability, with relevant implications for graduate students’ mental health. Recent studies point to a mental health crisis among this population. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate social support, resilience, and mental health indicators in stricto sensu graduate students. This is a quantitative, analytical, and cross-sectional study, with a sample of 566 master’s and doctoral students enrolled in two public higher education institutions located in the South and Northeast regions of Brazil. The instruments used were a Sociodemographic Questionnaire, the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12), the Perceived Social Support Scale, and the Resilience Scale. Data collection was conducted both online and in person, with approval from the Research Ethics Committees of the participating institutions. Data collection has been completed, and analyses are currently in the final stages. Three scientific articles have been developed. The first, a systematic review, has been accepted and is awaiting publication, and analyzed interventions aimed at promoting graduate students’ mental health. The second, already published, investigated the association between advisor–advisee relationships and mental health indicators. The third, still to be submitted, examined the relationships between mental health, social support, and resilience based on the study’s quantitative data. Overall, the findings indicate that promoting mental health in graduate education requires not only individual-level interventions but also institutional and cultural changes. In this context, strengthening social support and resilience emerges as a promising strategy for fostering healthier and more inclusive academic environments.
