SUMMARY:

Ruminant production in tropical regions depends on the availability of forage throughout the year. In semi-arid regions, the temporal variation of climatic conditions alters pasture production and structure. The objective was to evaluate the productive and structural characteristics of Brachiaria cultivars in response to temporal variation in the semi-arid region. The experiment was conducted at the Jundiaí Agricultural School, Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, in Macaíba, RN. Four Brachiaria cultivars were evaluated: Marandu, Xaraés, Paiaguás, and BRS Ipyporã, in a completely randomized design with four replications, totaling 16 paddocks, managed under intermittent grazing. Canopy height decreased over the months in all cultivars. Before grazing, Marandu, Xaraés, and Ipyporã showed significant reductions in canopy height. Forage mass varied across all cultivars throughout the months, with Marandu standing out, increasing from 2,369.66 kg DM ha⁻¹ in June to 3,997.99 kg DM ha⁻¹ in September. There was a reduction in the proportion of leaves and an increase in stem and dead material, resulting in a decrease in the leaf:stem ratio and the green:dead ratio throughout the evaluation months. An increase in dry matter content was observed in all cultivars from June (15.6 to 19.7%) to October (40.3 to 45.4%), and a decrease in crude protein content from June (6.8 to 12.7%) to October (3.4 to 3.7%). Thus, Brachiaria cultivars showed productive and structural changes throughout the grazing cycles, influenced by the reduction in water availability. During the driest period, there was a decrease in the proportion of leaves and crude protein content.
