SUMMARY:

Coping is a mental construct that represents how each person faces a threatening and
stress-triggering situation. When coping strategies involve religiosity and spirituality,
religious-spiritual coping is obtained. Religious-spiritual coping can be positive or
negative. In the first case, there is the search for spiritual support and assistance, the
personal use of faith to resolve the situation that is causing stress. In the second case,
there is the individual perception that the stressful situation is a form of divine
punishment, and is directly associated with discontent and dissatisfaction with God, in
addition to hopelessness and guilt. Religious-spiritual coping is related to the context of
hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, due to all the complexity and risk involved in
the therapy. Thus, the present study aims to analyze religious-spiritual coping in patients
undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. This is a quantitative study, with a
cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical design that will address patients undergoing
hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in a reference service in the state of Rio Grande
do Norte, from January to October 2025. Two data collection instruments will be
applied, a sociodemographic and clinical characterization questionnaire, and the
Religious-Spiritual Coping Scale. In compliance with Resolution 466/2012, which
defines the guidelines and regulatory standards for research involving human beings,
this project will be submitted for analysis by the Research Ethics Committee of the
Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, and will only be initiated after a favorable
opinion. It is expected that the research will provide an understanding and identification
of religious-spiritual coping, knowledge about the types of religious-spiritual coping
and the coping strategies used by hematopoietic stem cell transplant patients. This
information has the potential to contribute to health care, since it allows the appreciation
of biopsychosocial factors by going beyond the perspective focused solely on the
disease. In addition, it is expected that this study will fill a gap in the literature and
stimulate future research in this area in Brazil.
