SUMMARY:

This dissertation aims to analyze and describe the concept of visionary art using the philosophical ideas of Aldous Huxley as a reference. The general objective of this work is to present how conceptions such as being, unity, transcendence, ecstasy, and transfiguration may have influenced aesthetic and metaphysical theory concerning visionary experiences and vision-inducing arts. In the works The Doors of Perception, Heaven and Hell, as well as in Moksha, Huxley develops the idea of visionary experience, which includes different modes of transcendence of common perception, whether spontaneous, induced, pharmacological, or through sacred plants. Therefore, artistic expressions with visionary elements manifest the contents of the so-called distant continents of the mind, in order to bear witness, through creativity, to the expanded states of perception that surpass ordinary reality, in the sense of unveiling their characteristics possibly linked to an ontology found in arts, religion, and other cultures of the world, from antiquity to the contemporary era. In this way, through an analytical and descriptive methodology, considering a systematic literature review, through an approximate reading of Huxley’s works and critical fortune as strategic approaches, this research aims to answer the following question: what are the main philosophical conceptions that, according to Huxley, may be related to visionary art? As a result of this investigation, it is intended to clarify the relationship between ecstatic experimentation and its different manifestations through creative action, with the aim of re-signifying some fundamental concepts of the tradition concerning transcendence and mystical union from an aesthetic and metaphysical point of view.
