SUMMARY:

This dissertation investigates the reconfiguration of the feminine in Book V of Plato’s Republic, taking as its analytical axis the relationship between soul, oîkos, and polis. It is based on the hypothesis that the inclusion of women in the guardian class is not an isolated element of the Platonic project, but rather derives from the structural principles of his political and moral philosophy. Initially, the study examines the concept of justice in the Republic, with emphasis on the tripartite soul, the centrality of the Form of the Good, and the critique of Athenian democracy, showing how these elements ground the organization of the kallipolis. It then analyzes education as a transformative principle, understood as a process of turning the soul toward knowledge of the intelligible, a necessary condition for the legitimate exercise of political authority. Special attention is given to the historical context of the Greek polis in the fifth century BCE, particularly to the position of women within the Athenian oîkos and to the ambivalence of their representation in myth and tragedy. The core of the dissertation argues that the inclusion of women entails a de-privatization of the feminine, through the dissolution of the oîkos among the guardians and the redefinition of political participation according to the nature of the soul rather than the body. Finally, the study examines the contemporary reception of this proposal, situating the debate between functionalist and proto-feminist interpretations, and concludes that, although the inclusion of women is linked to the unity of the polis, it also implies a significant philosophical reconfiguration of the status of the feminine.
