SUMMARY:

The essence of thought in modern societies lies within the realm of calculation, and it is through this that all our actions are founded. Meditative thought is considered to be of the order of the useless, as it seemingly has no utility or purpose. Philosophy itself is deemed useless for lacking utility that determines it within its fields of knowledge. In the face of the demands of the useful, our research aims to investigate how we can escape the utilitarian and instrumental sphere that governs our technical world and understand the useless as a possibility for new ways of thinking and acting for humanity. A plausible proposal seeks to understand the relationship between meditative thought and calculative thought, bringing to light the controversies of this encounter. To verify the hypothesis that “in the technical world, man has the impression that he dominates everything”. The research will focus on a bibliographic review of themes considered useless by the world of calculation, such as happiness, freedom, art, and even philosophy itself. Initially, the plan is to present the arguments defended by the views of what is useful and useless and their respective objections, as well as alternative readings on the scope of the useless in Heidegger's thought. Next, it will catalog the main notions of what is understood as useless in Heidegger's works, analyze the role of meditative thought, which is capable of establishing a coherent interpretation and overcoming the refutations directed against the positions of calculative thought, as well as alternative interpretations regarding the viability of the useless in the life of Dasein. Understanding the issue of serenity is crucial in Heidegger's philosophy, as serenity is about letting things be as they are, allowing being to reveal itself. This involves acceptance and surrender to the mystery of being, attentive listening, and renunciation of the will to power that characterizes the technical era. It is expected that this new interpretive angle will offer a compatible and coherent response to the question of the importance of useless things and their contribution to the understanding and formation of humanity.
