Specialized libraries offer services and products aimed at disseminating specific information so that user communities can appropriate it and construct knowledge. In Brazil, specialized music libraries meet the needs of users in this field, and their reference and information services reflect this reality. Each library develops its services based on user demand and on librarians’ initiatives, within the possibilities afforded by its infrastructure, collections, resources, and staff. This study addresses the following research question: how can the investigation of other Brazilian specialized music libraries contribute to the development of the reference and information activities of the Padre Jaime Diniz Library at the UFRN Music School. This study aims to investigate the Reference and Information Service of Brazilian specialized music libraries in order to improve the services of the Padre Jaime Diniz Library at the UFRN Music School. The specific objectives are: to discuss the importance of the Reference and Information Service in specialized libraries; to characterize how the Reference and Information Service is delivered by Brazilian specialized music libraries, so as to contribute to the Padre Jaime Diniz Library; to examine the development of the Reference and Information Service in Brazilian music school libraries from the librarian’s perspective; and to design a primer focused on the Reference and Information Service of specialized music libraries. To meet these objectives, this study combined bibliographic research and documentary research drawn from library websites and normative documents as data collection methods. As the collection instrument, semi- structured interviews were used, and, for data analysis, the Content Analysis technique was applied. This study is characterized as exploratory in nature and qualitative in approach. It is justified within the context of specialized libraries, focusing on a specific area of Library Science: music, and the analysis of the Reference and Information Services offered by these libraries, in recognition of their role as key agents in the process of information mediation for a community with specific demands. The results show that specialized mediation, virtual reference service, educational reference service, and information curation are essential for specialized music libraries, as they promote information autonomy and democratic access to knowledge. Accordingly, as a contribution to these libraries, an informational booklet was developed presenting products and services that may serve as inspiration for Brazilian music libraries, as well as a form designed to support user studies and inform the evaluation of these libraries.
