The Social Role of the University Library: a proposal for the creation of a children’s space to support academic parenthood.
Academic parenthood; University library; Children’s space.
This research investigates the social role of the university library in promoting academic persistence, focusing on the demands of students and staff members who experience parenthood within higher education. The study is based on the assumption that academic persistence depends not only on access to higher education or individual performance, but also on the institutional, spatial, and informational conditions provided by universities. The research examines how the creation of a children’s space at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte Central Library Zila Mamede may contribute to supporting academic parenthood and expanding participation opportunities for individuals who balance study, work, and caregiving responsibilities. The theoretical framework brings together contributions from Information Science, Sociology of Education, care studies, and architecture, understanding the university library as a social infrastructure of mediation capable of promoting inclusion, belonging, and informational justice. The study also incorporates discussions on childhood architecture, neuroarchitecture, accessibility, and user experience, recognizing space as an active element in mediating academic and social experiences. Methodologically, this is a mixed-methods, qualitative-quantitative, exploratory study of a basic nature, combining literature review, analysis of library experiences involving children’s spaces, non-participant direct observation, questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews with administrators and members of the academic community who experience parenthood. As a contribution, the research seeks to broaden the understanding of the university library beyond its technical function, highlighting its role in promoting equity and academic persistence. In addition, the study proposes the development of a technical dossier containing architectural, institutional, and mediation guidelines for the implementation of the children’s space within the library.
