THE LAND DYNAMICS OF SERIDÓ POTIGUAR: LAND OWNERSHIP AND REPRODUCTION OF THE LATIFUNDIUM
Agrarian question; Land dynamics; Land structure; Seridó Potiguar.
The core of the debate on the so-called “agrarian question” has land as essential element, which can be
understood, in the capitalist system of production, as a special and irreproducible commodity. Thus,
discussing the agrarian question refers to the study of problems related to land in society throughout
history, considering its form of organization regarding the dynamics of land use, possession and ownership.
When investigating the Brazilian agrarian question, land concentration and large estates are seen as striking
characteristics, associated with the agricultural development model, based on the capitalization of land rent
and private ownership of land. When considering the agrarian issue of Seridó Potiguar, a region located in
the south-central portion of the state of Rio Grande do Norte, encompassing 25 municipalities, it is argued
that it was historically dynamized from territorial formation, directly linked to the agricultural-livestock
duality, activities that installed the latifundium and land concentration, being a legacy of the Portuguese
colonization process initiated in the region in the mid-to-late 17th century. Thus, the general objective of
this research is to analyze the land dynamics of Seridó Potiguar, considering the past and current processes
of configuration of private land ownership. The specific objectives include: i) Investigating the relationship
between the latifundium and the founding agrarian activities in Seridó; ii) Understanding the current role
of the latifundium in perpetuating the land concentration of the region; iii) Categorizing the current
disposition of the land structure of the Seridó region, considering the characteristics of the properties. The
research is of a qualitative and quantitative nature and is divided into four methodological stages, namely:
i) bibliographic survey and literature review; ii) survey of secondary data; iii) analysis of secondary data; iv)
mapping of the land structure.
