SUMMARY:
This master’s dissertation focuses on the analysis of so-called natural catastrophes and the social relations: of labor, social control, and power—between the landowning classes and workers in the 'oasis' of the Ceará sertões, the Cariri region, during the second half of the 19th century. Grounded in the field of Social History, this study seeks to examine the issues affecting the population of peasants, poor sertanejos, enslaved people, freedmen, and other workers, as well as their actions in the face of hardships and the political maneuvers of the landowning elite and state institutions. Furthermore, it investigates how discourses constructed the Cariri region of Ceará, particularly the city of Crato and its surroundings—as not only a natural but also a 'civilizational' 'oasis,' in contrast to the 'sertões,' which were identified by this landowning class as 'barbaric' and associated with the poverty, criminality, and alleged vagrancy of the working class. Methodologically, the research relies on the analysis of documentary sources such as periodicals, civil and criminal court cases, government documents—including reports from the presidents of the province of Ceará, official letters and other records from Municipal Councils, provincial legislation, and municipal bylaws—as well as memoirs, tracing the power dynamics that enveloped these historical subjects.
