SUMMARY:

This research analyzes the experiences of the English traveler Henry Koster based on his journeys through the sertão of the captaincies of Rio Grande do Norte and Pernambuco in the 19th century, between the years 1809 and 1818. By problematizing the concepts of sertão and historical experience through the writings of this wanderer, our analyses will be developed from sources such as the version entitled “Travels in Northeastern Brazil” (Koster, 1942), the book “Brazilian Chorography or Historical-Geographical Account of the Kingdom of Brazil” (Casal, 1817), and the work “Atlas of the Empire of Brazil” (Almeida, 1868). Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the personal trajectories, interests, and choices of the historical subject through the methodological paths constructed by microhistory, starting from the reduction of the scale of analysis, the problematization of a specific trajectory, seeking to understand the subject and their objectives and interests in their travels through the sertão, based on a bibliographic review that provides us with a greater understanding of the 19th century in the social context in which Koster, Portuguese America, and the sertão are inserted. Koster's work, belonging to the genre of travel literature, becomes a fundamental piece in our research for examining the traveler's displacements, spatial and social descriptions of the sertão. Koster's experiences as a traveler and merchant, his perspectives of otherness regarding the populations he encountered, and how these issues were essential for the conceptions that the traveler created regarding the concept of the sertão. In our heuristic processes, we consider it of great importance to work with the conceptions of those who experienced the sertão through writing and narrative. Thus, we aim to contribute to the study of personal trajectories and the analyses that flow through the lines they write and the voices that narrate the history of the sertões.
