SUMMARY:

The present research aims to analyze the school books of the intellectual Manoel Dantas that circulated in the state of Rio Grande do Norte in the years 1897 and 1924, a period in which the intellectual contributed to the production of writings about Rio Grande do Norte education. Thus, through this dissertation we seek to understand how the conception of sertão was written in the aforementioned books. Thus, we seek to understand what strategies the intellectual used so that this knowledge came to build the new profile of the country people, since modern knowledge was added to the culture of these people. To this end, we will analyze his main works: O Rio Grande do Norte: choragraphic essay (1918) and Denomination of municipalities - Rio Grande do Norte (1922) in these works, the researcher-educator brings the different aspects that constituted the municipalities of our state. In addition to these books, other sources will also be compared, such as texts published in periodicals of the time, newspapers, magazines and academic works, among others. In this research, we dialogue with Research line I of the Master's Program – Material culture, society and power in the sertões, housing investigations that are aligned with the dimensions of Social History and Political History. The methodology applied will be documentary research with a qualitative focus.
