IN THE “DUST OF UNSCURED ARCHIVES”, THE LIFE OF “GREAT MEN”: the writingof History and the construction of space by the Instituto Histórico e Geográfico do RioGrande do Norte (1902-1927)

This work analyzes and investigates the writing of history and the construction of the identityof Rio Grande do Norte by the Instituto Histórico e Geográfico do Rio Grande do Norte(IHGRN) as present in the biographies of its journal between 1902 and 1927. To do this,concepts such as “topography of interests”, “horizon of expectations”, “space of experiences”,memory and identity are used. Therefore, it aims to answer how the 'great men' wereportrayed in the writing of history between 1902 and 1927, what role IHGRN played in theconstruction of the history of Rio Grande do Norte (RN), and how the construction of spaceand identity was influenced by the writing of history through the biographies written by LuizManoel Fernandes Sobrinho in the IHGRN Journal. Finally, it includes the idea that thewriting of history by IHGRN was influenced by political and ideological interests and that theconstruction of the Rio Grande do Norte space was an important part of this process.Additionally, it highlights the importance of considering memory and identity inunderstanding and deepening the social, political, and educational context of the charactersinvolved and how these biographies contributed to the formation of meaning in the writing ofhistory by the “House of the Memory” of RN.
