This dissertation aims to investigate the historical process of formation and consolidation of the Society of Jesus' land holdings in the region of the Royal Audiencia of Quito, with an emphasis on the land settlements made in 1696 and their impact on indigenous populations and the colonial agrarian landscape. The research focuses on the legal and administrative mechanisms used by the Jesuit order to legitimize the possession of vast tracts of land, constituting part of the broader dynamics of land appropriation, evangelization, and social discipline in Spanish America. The research focuses on the 16th and 17th centuries, with a specific focus on the settlements of 1696, the year in which the Society of Jesus' land regularization processes intensified in the Ecuadorian highlands. The methodology adopted is qualitative in nature, combining historical analysis with legal-institutional and ethnohistorical approaches. The research uses a diverse set of primary sources, including petitions, decrees, declarations, and royal instructions, drawn primarily from the Miguel de Cervantes Library Archives, and colonial legislation compiled in Francisco Solano's Cedulario de Tierras. The core documentary corpus of the investigation consists of 26 land agreements promoted by the Society of Jesus in 1696 and 21 annual charters issued by the Society of Jesus, whose tabulation allowed for the identification of patterns of territorialization, legal arguments, and agents involved. The methodological procedures involved: paleographic documentary analysis of the agreements; tabulation of data such as location, land extension, amounts paid, justifications presented, and ethnicities mentioned; use of digital cartography tools (QGIS) to visually represent the Jesuit territorial domain and ethnic distribution in the region; and dialogue with theoretical frameworks that include authors such as Paolo Grossi, José-Miguel Lana Berasain, and Rosa Congost, highlighting the notion of dominium utile and property as a social and relational institution. The dissertation is structured in three chapters. The first discusses the legal foundations of the land composition system in Indian law and its redefinitions in the context of the Audiencia of Quito. The second chapter analyzes Jesuit involvement in the process of land accumulation, based on patrimonial documents and annual charters between 1587 and 1660, highlighting the phases of the order's presence and its articulation with colonial power. The third chapter examines the conflicts and negotiations that emerged in the proceedings of 1696, with special attention to Indigenous legal strategies, which combined resistance, accommodation, and agency in the face of the imposed logic of title. Ultimately, the study proposes that land compositions should be understood as legal rituals of translation, in which the Indigenous useful domain was legally reconfigured to adapt to the fiscal and political demands of the Spanish Empire, while local subjects negotiated spaces of autonomy within the colonial structure. The research thus contributes to the historiographical debate on the history of property in Latin America, revealing the persistence of colonial legacies in contemporary land disputes.

This research investigates the relationships between space, cinema, and memory in the films of Kleber Mendonça Filho between 1997 and 2016. The central problem mobilizing the study consists of analyzing the historical determinants of how urban spaces were appropriated in the Brazilian cinema of the Pernambuco-born director, especially in the films Caged In (1997), Cold Tropics (2009), and Aquarius (2016). The investigation works with the cinematographic forms produced from the process of verticalization in the city of Recife/PE, given that the transformation of the urban space in Recife involved urban verticalization over the course of the last decades covered by the selected films. The study contextualized Mendonça Filho's work within recent national film production in general, and that of Pernambuco in particular, as well as recent urban changes in contemporary Brazil, specifically gentrification and verticalization. The theoretical framework articulated concepts from the perspective of cultural geography and urbanism to understand gentrification processes in the Global South, with a special focus on the city of Recife; the notion of cinematographic operation; and the proposals of decolonial studies. The cultural dynamic that emerges, therefore, highlights a local/global cultural logic, a city appropriated by cinema through the manner in which global processes of urbanization (gentrification and verticalization) are realized as local realities. The films, in this case, serve as records of urban experiences, practices, and significations of a city in the Global South.

This dissertation investigates the construction of a Luso-tropicalist political-cultural itinerary of the intellectual from Rio Grande do Norte, Luís da Câmara Cascudo (1898–1986), based on his journey to Africa, carried out in 1963, when he left Brazil to study the roots of Brazilian food on that continent. We consider that this trajectory began in 1962, when Assis Chateaubriand extended to him an invitation to develop an ethnographic research project for the Sociedade de Estudos Históricos Dom Pedro II, and ended in 1967, with the publication of the last work resulting from that project. The journey reinforced intellectual interests that ran through his work as a folklorist, granting him a role as a political mediator and resulting in a scientific production that dialogued with Portuguese colonial policy. Thus, the central objective of this work is to problematize Câmara Cascudo’s journey to the so-called Portuguese Africa, seeking to understand how his intellectual production was constructed in such a way as to strengthen the idea of Luso-tropicalism, which presented Portugal as a civilizing empire of the African colonies. The theoretical framework that supports our reflections is grounded in authors such as Jean-François Sirinelli (2003), who discusses the concept of the intellectual; Angela Castro Gomes and Patricia Santos Hansen (2016), who explore the notion of political and cultural mediator; Michel Foucault (2013), who allowed me to mobilize an idea of relational space; and Claudia Castelo (1999), whose work sheds light on the relations between Luso-tropicalism and intellectual practices. As methodological procedures, we examined period sources from the time: articles, interviews, and reports about the journey, as well as correspondence between Cascudo and other intellectuals, telegrams sent to the Portuguese government, and records of the mission, such as notes, documentary, and photographs. We also analyzed the author’s bibliographical production related to the theme, especially A Cozinha Africana no Brasil (1964), Made in Africa (1965), and História da Alimentação no Brasil (1967), works that resulted directly from this experience. All this material was investigated in light of discourse analysis, according to Michel Foucault (2004), with the aim of understanding how the Luso-tropicalist idea was elaborated in the thought of Luís da Câmara Cascudo based on his journey to Portuguese Africa.

This research investigates the construction of the tuberculous body as a space of intervention of public health policies during the administration of Gustavo Capanema (1934 -1945). The study seeks to understand how tuberculosis, throughout the twentieth century, shaped social practices, discourses, and public policies in Brazil, transforming the sick body into an object of control and normalization by different forms of knowledge and institutions. The theoretical framework is based on authors such as Bertolli Filho (2001), who discusses the history of tuberculosis and the tuberculous patient in Brazil; Michel Foucault (2001), who, in theoretical terms, conceives the body as a space a concept essential to this research; Lenharo (1986), who also addresses the centrality of the body, focusing on the 1930s and 1940s, when several institutions turned their attention to the normalization of bodies; and Mehy (2014), who contributes to understanding public policies as a field of disputes and institutional practices. The study contextualizes the debate on health and disease in Brazil, highlighting the centrality of tuberculosis for physicians, jurists, public administrators, and other social agents, proposing a shift from the traditional focus on the disease to the body as a space of intervention. The concept of spatiality is mobilized to analyze how the sick body became, over time, an observable, normalized, and politically invested space. The dissertation is structured in three moments. First, it analyzes the historical and social context of the 1930s and 1940s and the strategies of tuberculosis prophylaxis within the Ministry of Education and Health. Next, it examines how the press, medical congresses, and education acted as devices for the circulation and consolidation of scientific, hygienist, and eugenic conceptions, highlighting the role of schools and Physical Education in the intervention upon bodies. Finally, it analyzes the materiality of these policies through the spaces produced around the disease such as sanatoriums, dispensaries, hospitals, and preventoria evidencing medical classifications, strategies of isolation, and spatial transformations that configured distinct ways of organizing and managing the tuberculous body. Throughout this process, it also discusses the centrality of the body as a space of symbolic and practical dispute, considering its multiple dimensions, whether legal, educational, demographic, religious, or architectural. Methodologically, the research is based on documentary analysis, having as its main source documents belonging to the Gustavo Capanema Personal Archive (CPDOC/FGV), complemented by other official records and medical periodicals of the time.

This dissertation analyzes the three treatises by the monk John of Damascus (c. 675 - c. 750) based on the theory of memory space and cultural memory developed by German intellectuals Aleida Assmann (2011) and Jan Assmann (1988; 2008). In this process, in order to establish a relationship between the Syrian monk's texts and the concepts, a historiographical gap was noted regarding the role of memory in the source analyzed. As a result, it was found that the debate about memory in Damascene's treatises revolves around the icon, a fundamental imagery element in Christian liturgy. The relevance of holy images is also linked to their pedagogical function in the Byzantine setting of the 8th and 9th centuries, the period when Iconoclasm took place. Thus, it can be conceived that Iconoclasm and the treatises of John Damascene are intrinsically related, since the Syrian monk wrote the discourses to defend the use of images against the policy of eliminating holy images in the Byzantine Empire. In this context, there were two groups within the movement: the iconoclasts (against icons) and the iconophiles (in favor of icons). These groups were in constant conflict during the Byzantine iconoclasm period, disputing the legitimacy of the doctrine surrounding icons. However, it was not only theology that the iconoclasts and iconophiles disputed, as memory was also a subject of discussion. Thus, this research seeks to analyze the icon as a space of memory, seeking to interpret the disputes over holy images as a stimulus for the consolidation of the presence of these representations or the modification of cultural memory. This is the problem of the research, whose main objective is to verify the icon as a memorial, which can be understood as a space of memory based on the theory of the Assmann couple. Next, to analyze the basic purpose of the study, we turn to methodological issues. Thus, through the interpretation of Hans Belting (2009), icons are understood as part of Byzantine society, and through the analysis of Laurence Bardin (2011), we can understand the reason for the most recurring words or subjects in the treatises. With the methodological assistance of Belting (2009) and Bardin (2011), it is possible to examine the treatises studied. Through this, it is also possible to investigate the modus operandi of Byzantine historiography to examine Iconoclasm. For a deeper relationship between the source studied and historical production, it was verified how the writings of John Damascene greatly influenced different fields, helping to spread the memory of the iconophiles. In general terms, this dissertation aims to examine the treatises of John of Damascus in order to verify whether the research problem and main objective are relevant, using the concepts of memory space and cultural memory of the Assmann couple to understand the problem of the icon as a memorial.

This dissertation analyzes Everardo Backheuser's political thought in the period between his conversion to Catholicism in 1928 and the publication of A Sedução do Comunismo (The Seduction of Communism) in 1933, with the aim of understanding the articulation between anti-communism, geopolitics, and Catholicism in his work. A prominent intellectual in the fields of geography and education, Backheuser was a pioneer in the introduction of geopolitics in Brazil and, after his conversion, became actively involved in the Dom Vital Center, emerging as one of the most expressive voices of militant Catholicism during the period. The research investigates how his adherence to Catholicism shaped his anti-communism through the influence of anti-modern Catholic thought. Methodologically, the study falls within the field of the History of Political Ideas, engaging in dialogue with intellectual history and critical geopolitics. It is argued that Backheuser's anti-communism cannot be understood solely as an ideological position, but rather as an expression of an anti-modern myth that shaped his interpretation of historical and political reality. Backheuser developed a worldview that can be understood as a form of religious geopolitics, in which modern geopolitical categories were reinterpreted in light of the theological and moral principles of Catholicism. From this perspective, he proposed that world reality be understood as an opposition between Rome and Moscow, two antagonistic civilizational poles: on the one hand, order, tradition, and unity, represented by Catholicism; on the other, the moral, social, and national disintegration associated with communism—the ultimate expression of modern ideologies.

This dissertation analyzes the formation and consolidation of the Brasília Teimosa community, in Natal (RN), between 1958 and 1968, with the aim of understanding the historical and socioeconomic dynamics that shaped this territory and reveal the contradictions of local urbanization. Grounded in Urban History, the research draws on the theoretical framework of the production of space and the right to the city as developed by Henri Lefebvre, articulated with the understanding of property as a social construct and the role of discourse in producing meanings about popular territories. Methodologically, the study is based on the analysis of journalistic sources, institutional documents, maps, and oral interviews, allowing for the articulation of representations and lived experiences of the residents. The results show that Brasília Teimosa emerged in a context of intense urbanization, population growth, and insufficient housing policies, being formed by workers and migrants who resorted to informal occupation as a strategy for accessing housing. Throughout the period, the community was subjected to successive attempts of removal by the municipal government, revealing exclusionary urban projects. It is concluded that Brasília Teimosa does not constitute an anomaly, but rather an expression of the contradictions of urban modernization.

This dissertation analyzes how Indigenous women use the TikTok plataform to promote cultural visibility, dispute narratives, and deconstruct stereotypes historically associated with Indigenous peoples. Situated within the field of Digital Public History, the research is grounded in the assumption that social media platforms enable the expansion of Indigenous voices, allowing historically silenced subjects to assume the role of legitimate producers of their own histories. The study is guided by the following research question: how does content produced by Indigenous creators on TikTok, and the interpretations it generates, reveal the mediations that structure narrative disputes in the digital space (2020–2023)? As sources, approximately 200 videos published between 2020 and 2023 by four Indigenous creators were analyzed, selected based on engagement criteria and a defined temporal framework. Methodologically, the research draws on Content Analysis, as proposed by Laurence Bardin, and on Jesús Martín-Barbero’s Theory of Mediations, enabling the examination of both the thematic and discursive aspects of the videos and their dimensions related to communicational mediations.

At the dawn of the 20th century, intellectuals linked to the political, intellectual, and economic circles of Rio Grande do Norte began to dedicate themselves to gathering documents that were scattered in archives throughout the state and Brazil. Gathered in the Historical and Geographical Institute of Rio Grande do Norte (IHGRN), established in Natal on March 29, 1902, these intellectuals established strategies aimed at "collecting, systematizing, archiving, and publishing" documents relating to the past of Rio Grande do Norte. Through these initiatives, they sought to strengthen the arguments mobilized in defense of the state's cause in the legal arena, to inscribe the historical trajectory of Rio Grande do Norte on the majestic and impressive canvas of Clio, to expand networks of sociability through the institution's membership, and, above all, to constitute a collection dedicated to safeguarding the state's past. This dissertation develops within the scope of the investigation into the formation of this collection. By employing the theoretical framework proposed by Aleida Assmann (2011), the IHGRN collection is understood as a space of remembrance, constituted from the interaction between functional memory and storage memory. From this perspective, this study seeks to analyze the formation process of the collection of the Historical and Geographical Institute of Rio Grande do Norte between the years 1902 and 1907. To this end, different documentary sources were compared, among which the Journals of the Historical and Geographical Institute of Rio Grande do Norte stand out, focusing on the minutes of the ordinary, extraordinary and general assembly sessions of the Institute, the Legislative Acts and Decrees of the Government of the State of Rio Grande do Norte, the Messages of the Governor of the State and the newspaper A República. It is argued that the use and production of a collection within an institute created for the purpose of promoting the writing of the history of Rio Grande do Norte, at the beginning of the 20th century, contributed to the development of a republican political culture articulated with the interests of the state's ruling elite, notably the Albuquerque Maranhão family organization.

Analyzes the trajectory of Sérgio de Oliveira Dieb (1950–1995), an architect, artist, and militant of the Brazilian Communist Party (PCB), highlighting his trajectory in Natal between the end of the civil-military dictatorship and the process of redemocratization. The work investigates, on the one hand, how Dieb viewed the spaces of the city, seeking to transform them through his militancy, and, on the other, how he reconciled his political struggles with his personal dilemmas. The aim is to identify — from a concrete subject — how a Brazilian communist militant, in the transition from the 1970s to the 1980s, when the military regime was weakening, constructed identity relations with the city in which he lived. Dieb was elected councilor in Natal for two consecutive terms (1979–1988) and municipal secretary during the administration of Mayor Wilma de Faria (1989–1993). This parliamentarian’s proposals for Natal included improving the conditions of peripheral neighborhoods, which included the construction of cultural centers; democratization of public transportation; participation of social movements in city hall decisions; preservation of the Atlantic Forest; participation in public actions in defense of sexual minorities. These proposals make explicit the problems he identified in the city and the actions he carried out while proclaiming a more inclusive and participatory urban life. The research also addresses aspects of his private life, especially those related, on the one hand, to the fact that Dieb lived in the Tirol neighborhood and articulated his political actions in peripheral neighborhoods and, on the other, to his sexuality, since he probably lived a conflict between the guidelines imposed by society and the demands of the communist ideal itself in that period, in which the experience of loves that went beyond heterosexual relationships was not admitted. Theoretically, the dissertation is based on the concepts of political culture (as defined by Serge Berstein), historical biography (as presented by Sabina Loriga), and space (as defined by Milton Santos). In addition, the study is also theoretically anchored in the works of Alessandro Portelli, who establishes important guidelines for the work carried out with oral history, since from this author bases were established for understanding narrative and memory as subjective and collective processes. Regarding the sources, the work uses written and oral sources. In relation to the written documents, the following were used: the newspapers Tribuna do Norte, Diário de Natal, O Poti, and Voz da Unidade, in which information about Dieb was found; institutional documents, such as City Council minutes, bills, among others. With regard to oral sources, 10 people were interviewed, including family members, friends, political militants, and Dieb’s adversaries.

This dissertation investigates the process of territorial formation and the consolidation of borders in the Alto Paraguai region during the 18th century (1720-1780), focusing on the actions of the Portuguese Crown. The research argues that the Treaty of Madrid (1750), the Directorate of the Indians (1755/1758), and the Treaty of San Ildefonso (1777) were not isolated milestones but functioned as three links in a "chain of structural complementarity," permanently guided by the principle of Uti Possidetis de facto. Initially, it demonstrates how geographical myths, such as the Laguna de los Xarayes and the Island of Brazil, transformed the backcountry into a strategic frontier and justified territorial exploration. Subsequently, it highlights the pragmatic occupation of the territory through urban foundations (such as Vila Bela da Santíssima Trindade) and militarization, emphasizing the agency and "identity management" of indigenous populations, which were fundamental in composing the demographic barrier required by the metropolitan project. Finally, the study reveals that the legislation of the Directorate was subverted and adapted to defense urgencies, and that the Treaty of San Ildefonso operated as a diplomatic ratification of a presence already cemented in space. Therefore, it concludes that the colonial political map of Alto Paraguai was the consequence of territorialization, forged by the accumulation of precarious projects and frontier adaptations.

This dissertation investigates how the romanistic literature of Rodolfo Teófilo, produced between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, operates as a historical device of language in the fabrication of bodily image spaces of the inhabitants of Ceará and the so-called “dry North,” encompassing the provinces and states of Paraíba, Ceará, Pernambuco, and Rio Grande do Norte. It is grounded on the assumption that “flesh” constitutes the space where social, cultural, and political discourses are inscribed, being transformed into bodies through processes of signification. The study articulates social class, race, and gender as its central analytical categories, understood not as natural givens but as historical constructions that classify, hierarchize, and produce intelligibility over corporealities. Regarding social class, it highlights how the drought of 1877–1879 and the smallpox epidemic produced unequal bodily experiences, marking the bodies of migrants with signs of misery, disease, and exclusion, while literary narratives reinforced social stereotypes. Concerning race, it analyzes how Teófilo appropriated the scientific and eugenic discourses of his time, inscribing racial hierarchies onto bodies and articulating literature with politics and hygienism. As for gender, the dissertation demonstrates how the novels function as technologies of gender, producing and reiterating hierarchical positions between masculinity and femininity, naturalizing social roles and regulating behaviors through narrative. Thus, literature is not approached as a mere reflection of reality but as a meaning-producing practice that intervenes in the ways bodies are perceived, represented, and experienced. In this sense, the study contributes to historiography by proposing an analysis of literature as a space for the inscription of historical events onto corporealities, emphasizing the centrality of language in the production of human experience and in the historical construction of bodies.

The objective of this dissertation is to analyze how the proposal for the modernization of the State, formulated by the military governments established in Brazil from 1964 onwards, was expressed in the construction of the Administrative Center of Rio Grande do Norte. The work is temporally delimited between the publication of the preliminary study for the construction of the building, in 1972, and the beginning of the activities of the Administrative Center, in 1976. The construction of this center sought to group all the buildings of the state administration, which until then were scattered in various places in the city of Natal. In this sense, the new building caused the emptying of public buildings located in the central region of the city and directed the urban expansion of Natal to the south. The study defends the thesis that the modernization project that outlined the bases of the administrative center – structured on the tripod of national developmentalism, technocratic planning and administrative probity – was materialized from numerous contradictions both in relation to the project of the military governments and in the practices developed by the Cortez Pereira government. Regarding the contradictions of the military governments' project, elements of continuity were identified in Brazilian society, characterized by the implementation of state planning without the participation of the people. Concerning the practices developed by Cortez Pereira, it was detected that a series of measures were adopted that contradict the discourse of probity, such as: 1. the appointment of brothers and nephews to prominent positions in the state government; 2. the adoption of measures that favored political groups, disregarding technical opinions; 3. the protagonism of the state's first lady, Mrs. Aída Pereira, who became coordinator of a group called "Community Auxiliary Line," which controlled large sums of resources, many of which were considered by the courts to be sources of budgetary misappropriation; 4. the widespread corruption identified by the Federal Government's oversight bodies, which resulted in the revocation of the political rights of some figures in this government. The following sources were used for the research: the newspapers Diário de Natal, O Poti, and Tribuna do Norte; The 1970 census; the government messages read by Cortez Pereira to the State Legislative Assembly; the Serete Plan, an urban planning study that provided the basis for the construction of Natal's first Master Plan; and the functional and structural designs of the administrative center. Didactically, the work is structured in three parts. Initially, the urban occupation of the area where the administrative center was built is discussed; then, the political practices adopted by the Cortez Pereira government that contrasted with the state's modernization discourse are addressed; and finally, the designs for the construction of the administrative center and the financing process are discussed.

This study investigates the work of Oswaldo Câmara de Souza (1904–1995) during his tenure representing the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Directorate in Rio Grande do Norte (DPHAN-RN) between 1961 and 1974, to understand a policy of heritage designation driven by him. This time frame was drawn in due to the period in which Oswaldo Câmara de Souza joined DPHAN-RN, in 1961, and the year of retirement as a state representative. The patrimonial services began, there were a series of material asset seizures in the State in an unseen way in previous or subsequent administrations that of Oswaldo de Souza. This leads us to the understanding that mapping, inventorying and recording was a work in tune with the patrimonial policies of this period, which focused most of their attention on material goods. In theoretical-historiographical terms, we work with the relationship between memory, heritage and identity. Methodologically, we analyzed the reports sent by Oswaldo de Souza to DPHAN, the instruction processes of the listed assets and the newspapers of the period that transmitted information about the listings to the general public, and also the exchanges of correspondence between Oswaldo de Souza and DPHAN.

This thesis investigates the Christianization process of Iceland between 1056 and 1264. Through an analysis of Jóns saga helga from the perspective of Michel Pêcheux’s Discourse Analysis, it proposes that the religious transition occurred not through rupture, but via the emergence of an identity-based "Third Space." Grounded in Homi K. Bhabha’s post-colonial theory, the study demonstrates that the Icelandic Christian identity was forged in a zone of cultural hybridity, where continental Christianity did not eradicate Norse traditions but rather assimilated and re-signified them within local socioeconomic and political structures. By examining the actions of Jón Ögmundsson, the first bishop of Hólar, the research highlights how episcopal sanctity was constructed from native codes of honor and power, transforming the bishop into a mediator capable of navigating tensions between Norse traditions and Latin liturgy. This synthesis resulted in the "Icelandicization" of the faith, manifested in both the literary production of the sagas and the reconfiguration of the island’s physical landscape, where cathedrals and monasteries overlaid ancient centers of power, consolidating a sacred geography that unified the nation under a new syncretic and resilient identity.

This study aims to analyze the construction of a far-right political culture within the Assembly of God Evangelical Churches (AD), particularly those affiliated with the General Convention of the Assemblies of God in Brazil (CGADB), its largest branch. It examines a militant conservatism that, among other aspects, expressed support for the military dictatorship (1964-1985) and later the adherence of some of its members to the global wave of far-right politics from the second to the third decade of the 21st century. For this survey, I utilized official AD literature, primarily the Mensageiro da Paz newspaper and the Lições Bíblicas handbook, which bear markers of an editorial stance that, during this period, echoed the same themes, agendas, and political interests as the Brazilian far-right. In this sense, I point out that certain trends and concerns within the Assemblies' communicative culture aligned with preferences common to the far-right mainstream between 2016 and 2022. I demonstrate signs of an adherence by affinity that contributed to building a reactionary political culture ideologically identified with the rise of Jair Messias Bolsonaro. Drawing on theoretical frameworks from Pierre Bourdieu's (1981; 2004) political and religious fields, Michel de Certeau's (1994) practices of space, and referencing Paul Freston's (1993) research on the relationship between Protestantism and politics, I discuss how the maintenance of sectarian characteristics institutionalized by the AD was co-opted by leaders to strain and manufacture an identification with Brazilian far-right conservatism. I present the invention of a Bolsonarist "Sebastianism" and a cyber-activism practiced by Assemblies pastor Elinaldo Renovato de Lima, who faced two lawsuits for using cyberspace to disseminate fake news during the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2022 electoral campaign. These cases had significant repercussions among Assemblies members nationwide, given the leader's prominence in this religious segment. Simultaneously, I address the projection of this cyber-activism and institutional proselytism onto the official CGADB networks, the institutional action Cidadania AD Brasil, and its reproduction on the Assembleianos de Valor page, a profile that became a bastion of Assemblies Bolsonarism on social media. The research contributes to academic debate, among other concerns: the development of a preferential political culture encouraged by religious leaders and its interference in democratic processes; the partisan use of the AD church with engagement in cyberspace; how these actions can harm the proper appropriation of the right to religious freedom; and how the abuse of religious power can threaten the exercise of citizenship.

In this thesis, I analyze the process of racialization of Black and poor bodies through the visual collection produced by the Salvador City Urban Planning Office (EPUCS) in the post-abolition context. The choice of the post-abolition period as the setting for this narrative emphasizes the persistent and conflicting historiographical gap, particularly between the 1920s and 1950s, when it comes to the daily survival and tensions of Black bodies in the city of Salvador. The central objective of this thesis is to consider the EPCUS as part of a set of institutions that plotted to construct a new visuality associated with the city based on the racialization and criminalization of the Black body, seeking to subjugate it to a place of subordination. Thus, methodologically, I understand the photographic body and the photographic experience as a practice of producing social meaning. In contrast, I problematize the housing reports, epidemiological surveys and the set of sources produced by EPUCS, which, under the yoke of eugenic improvement, assumed its most violent face, promoting interventions against the ways of life of Black and poor bodies.

The objective of this research is to analyze the experience of vocational education through the concept of traumatized memory space. Comprised of the Ginásios Vocacionais (Vocational Gymnasiums) and the Serviço de Ensino Vocacional (Vocational Education Service), this system was developed in the State of São Paulo during the 1960s (1961–1970), encompassing six units: one in the capital and others in the countryside cities of Americana, Batatais, Barretos, Rio Claro, and São Caetano do Sul. The study analyzes the historical narratives elaborated on this experience, as well as primary documentation, to understand to what extent the end imposed by the Military State affected memory and the making sense of the past. Documentary analysis was conducted on sources from CEDIC (PUC-SP), newspaper and magazine articles from the Hemeroteca Digital, and military proceedings against vocational education available at the National Archives. Testimonies and other sources from the analyzed historiography were also used. The research discusses the pedagogical practices of these schools and their underlying philosophy, highlighting the works of four philosophers: Henrique Lima Vaz, Teilhard de Chardin, Emmanuel Mounier, and Karl Marx. Through the concept of traumatized memory space, it is perceived that the attribution of a consistent philosophy to vocational education was done a posteriori, as a result of the historical trauma corresponding to its forced closure. Furthermore, it analyzes historical narratives regarding the origins, development, and crises faced by the agents of this system. Using primary documentation, the study confronts the selection of facts, their transformation into historical facts, and the implications for the constitution of sense. Finally, it examines the events surrounding the end of the experience (1968–1969). Primary documentation concerning the installation of the Pluricurriculares and the military processes reveals disputes over the hegemony of pedagogical renewal in São Paulo, suggesting that this also influenced the termination of the vocational system. It concludes that the history of this experience is permeated by a traumatized memory space, requiring the elaboration of loss through historical mourning and bereavement.

The privileg study investigates how descendants of pardos, indigenous peoples, and crioulos were textually named as “whites” or identified with the letter “B” in the parish records of Ribeira do Seridó throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. It aims to understand the meaning of being privi within this privileg and how non-white individuals—those identified as mestiços—appropriated the conceived social space and constituted senses of place through their lived experiences. The analysis is grounded in the concepts of conceived space (Henri Lefebvre), as well as place, placeness, and placelessness (Edward Relph). The association between these concepts, in line with a Heideggerian phenomenological interpretation, provides the theoretical framework necessary to analyze the spatial formation of Ribeira do Seridó over time. Furthermore, the study problematizes the social composition of this space, mobilizing the concepts of quality/color and condition (Paiva) to examine social hierarchies and inequalities. Regarding its privilegie basis, the research draws on parish records (baptism, marriage, and death registers), judicial sources (post-mortem inventories and manumission letters), and administrative documents (population maps), examined through data triangulation and quantitative, serial, qualitative, onomastic, evidentiary, and micro-historical methodologies. Finally, this research fills historiographical gaps concerning the senses of place constituted in the colonial and imperial privile of Ribeira do Seridó, demonstrating that the term “White”— priv like “mestiço”— is a historical construction associated with social inequalities, access, and privilegie.

This thesis analyzes the process of territorialization of the Parish of Santa Ana do Matos, located in the sertão of Rio Grande do Norte, between 1821 and the 1870s. The initial temporal milestone corresponds to the year in which the parish was established, while the subsequent decades provide the basis for understanding territorial formation, the spiritual support provided to parishioners, as well as both internal organization – through brotherhoods and confraternities – and external organization – through desobrigas (pastoral visits to outlying areas), and also societal mobility, family formation, and daily life. With regard to its spatial scope, this research focuses on the sertão of Açu and its river valley – more specifically its right bank – where the parish church, dedicated to Santa Ana, was established in the settlement of Santa Ana do Pé da Serra (1821) and, later, the Constitutional Village of Santa Ana do Matos (1836). This study adopts the methodological approaches of the Evidential Paradigm, and also Micro-History, Serial History, and Quantitative History; alongside cartographic representation using the spot mapping method to process, analyze, and cross-reference several categories of sources, namely: administrative documents (petitions and sesmaria land grants, records from the Board of Conscience and Military Orders, population maps of Rio Grande do Norte); judicial records (Book of Transcriptions and Conveyances from the Registry of Santana do Matos, post-mortem inventories); and religious records (baptismal, marriage, and death records, as well as account books from the Irmandade do Santíssimo Sacramento and Irmandade de Santa Ana). This work has its theoretical basis on the concepts of socially produced space and territorialization (Henri Lefebvre); territory (Antônio Carlos Robert de Moraes); territoriality (Robert Sack); christianization of space (Cláudia Damasceno); and hagiotoponyms (Maria Valentina do Amaral Dick). The central argument is that the occupation of the right bank of the Açu River by cattle ranches, the practice of desobrigas in this territory, and the subsequent construction of chapels were the primary factors responsible for organizing and establishing social relations in the process of territorialization in the Parish of Santa Ana do Matos. Consequently, by regarding the parish as a mechanism for spatial control and appropriation, this thesis focused on understanding the process of territorialization of the Parish of Santa Ana do Matos, located in the Açu River valley, another sertão dedicated to the grandmother of Jesus in the hinterlands of Rio Grande do Norte.

This Thesis investigates the royal Funerary Space of the early 19th Dynasty, taking as its focus the tomb of Seti I (KV17), constructed in the Valley of the Kings, behind the mountain on the western bank of Thebes, present-day Luxor, Egypt. The research, grounded in our updated perspective on the Theory of Material Engagement, analyses the various funerary discourses present within this space as cognitive, material and historical resources in which the beliefs of the period were organised into narratives integrating structural, iconographic and textual elements. Each of the discourses has been translated into Portuguese and examined in this Thesis. The Amduat organises the nocturnal solar journey and the procedural logic of the Beyond; the Gates regulate access, transformations and temporalities; the Litany of Re expands the forms of divine manifestation and the mobility of the deceased; the Celestial Cow reorganises the cosmos following the massacre and redefines the relationships between power, order and violence; and the Astronomical Text situates the pharaoh in the sky, ensuring his permanence among the visible and invisible cycles of time. Each funerary discourse defines specific forms of circulation, knowledge and agency, articulating visions of time, space and eternity. Our thesis asserts that these texts construct a dynamic Beyond, wherein writing, images and structure are fundamental and intrinsically linked to spatiality and ritual, highlighting the plurality and complementarity of the paths of the Beyond. We have divided this Thesis into three volumes: the first contains seven chapters analysing this Funerary Space; the second is a catalogue of all the walls of Seti I’s tomb; the third comprises the funerary discourses translated into Portuguese (Amduat, Gates, Celestial Cow, Litany of Re, Ritual of Opening the Mouth, Litany of the Eye of Horus and Astronomical Text). Thus, Seti I’s tomb is understood as a veritable map of the Beyond, an active and performative space in which the pharaoh never ceases to walk, to know and to exist, sustaining an eternity constructed through the articulation of multiple funerary discourses.

This thesis studies the process of formation of slums and favelas in the city of Teresina, Piauí, during the 1980s and 1990s, using migratory processes as the main basis for the social formation of Teresina's inhabitants. Thus, considering both the expansion process and the multiple ways in which the city manifests itself through social agents, as well as the relationship that arose with the need for management that characterizes the urban space, the city of Teresina is discussed here as a space that produces and reproduces social relations, expressing complex sociability within the population agglomeration, in order to record social contrasts and existing conflicts within urban centers. Thus, the historical process of the formation of the city of Teresina allows us to analyze the urban transformations in the city, which, in a certain way, characterizes the construction of the problems involving the difficulties faced by migrants (Araújo, 2010) who arrived in Teresina, and who often incorporated the daily practices of the urban poor (Lima A. J. 2003). This triggered a struggle and conflicts in the city for the right to housing, with the occupation of empty spaces, mainly in the late 1980s and early 1990s, forming the shantytowns and favelas (Lima A. J. 2007). Therefore, this work also addresses a journey through the historiography of Piauí, exposing details of the transfer of the capital with the imaginary of progress, which boosted the urban growth of the city with migratory flows and, as a consequence, a reorganization of the city's space in the second half of the 20th century. In this context, conceptions about migratory processes and the formation of Teresina society are described, with a strong relationship between forms of migration and this. The idea of Migration of Power is discussed, which is related to the power of Piauí families who influenced political and economic decisions. The construction of the new capital reorganized power practices; thus, the construction of Teresina in 1852 restructured the bases of political and economic influence in Piauí, causing a rearrangement of political power. Furthermore, the migratory flow is analyzed as a determining factor in the demographic growth of Teresina, influencing its society. Therefore, in analyzing the historical construction of the city of Teresina and the migratory processes that formed the basis of the city's social formation, including the formation of slums and favelas that characterize vulnerable spaces, we consider the meanings produced as a way of resignifying the relationships built in the capital through the right to housing. This work follows a documentary research approach, through the analysis of historical documents, as well as newspapers from the period and images, seeking a more in-depth analysis of historical facts to understand the relationship between migrant populations and the urban expansion process of Teresina.

Neo-Assyrian imperial palaces were not merely administrative or power centers, but vehicles for the production and preservation of cultural memory. Their architectural space, composed of parietal reliefs and epigraphic and cuneiform inscriptions, functioned as mnemonic devices intended to preserve an official memory of the Assyrian royalty, its king, and its people, highlighting imperial hegemony and divine order, projecting these messages both to the contemporary audience and to posterity. Reliefs and inscriptions are not treated as objects, but as living things, bearers of material agency, interacting with humans and architectural environments, shaping minds and behaviors, effecting a process of Material Engagement in which these artifacts – despite various possible “deviations from the path” – remain active in the present, intertwined. This paper proposes a “Brazilian Assyriology,” produced from the Northeast of Brazil, questioning the Eurocentric and Orientalist view that reduced Assyria to a stereotype of barbarism and violence. It defends a pluralistic perspective that recognizes the realities of the Assyrian imperial structure, expressed in the composition of official texts and images as part of a negotiated political strategy of hegemony and an apotropaic device to maintain Cosmic Equilibrium and the prevailing social order. The impressive force of these material records allows for the analysis of the circularity of Assyrian memory in the contemporary world, since the Assyrian past reappears in contemporary art productions; in the recognition and valorization of Mesopotamian historical, archaeological, and cultural heritage in the face of the scourge of destroyed monuments; in the fostering of contemporary national identities animated by the recovery of publicly recognizable Assyrian symbols; in appropriations and promotion of propaganda and legitimation of political power; and as part of Brazilian culture, identifiable in architecture and literature. These aspects attest that Assyria is a past that has not been lost, but continues to flow along a meshwork or a set of vines, connecting different times and spaces through its material and mnemonic traces.
