RESUMO:

Extractivism of seaweed banks and seaweed farming activities comprise knowledge acquired through local traditions in direct contact with the marine ecosystem and knowledge transmitted by their ancestors. Moreover, seaweeds are also considered as a valuable source of important ecological and economic value, because of providing multiple ecosystem services. In this context, this study aimed to analyze and understand the knowledge and practices of seaweed extractivists and farmers from the Rio do Fogo beach and their relationship with the conservation of these natural resources. The ecosystem services provided by seaweeds and their importance to coastal communities were also identified. The methodological procedure was accomplished in three stages: first, a bibliographic survey was carried out on conservation and lifestyles of the coastal extractive community and the knowledge and practices of traditional populations. Afterwards, field research was conducted through semi-structured questionnaires with questions related to social issues, economic profile, productive practices, management of G. birdiae and empirical knowledge on coastal ecosystems. The third phase consisted in identifying the ecosystem services of seaweed farming. For this, the classification scheme, elaborated by TEEB (2010) and by Groot et al. (2002), was used. The classification methodology was based on two main steps. Initially a bibliographic review was carried out using online databases published between 2009 and 2019, concerning ecosystem services of seaweeds. Then, a local approach was performed based on a list of ecosystem services identified at the study site associated with G. birdiae farming. Through this study, it was possible to verify that traditional knowledge and practices in extractive activities and seaweed farming influence the conservation of natural resources and that the rational use of these resources is important for perpetuating traditional populations in the areas they are inserted. Furthermore, in general, several ecosystem services are provided by seaweed banks and seaweed farming, which can contribute to environmental conservation and human well-being.
