SUMMARY:

Professional health education in Brazil takes place within a context marked by disputes between different societal projects, particularly between the principles of the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) and the neoliberal hegemony that guides part of educational and social policies. In this scenario, equity constitutes one of the fundamental principles of the SUS; however, its incorporation into professional education still faces limitations resulting from an educational logic often oriented toward market interests and technicist teaching models. Therefore, this study aims to understand how neoliberal hegemony permeates professional education in higher health education, highlighting the gaps related to the approach to equity in this educational process, as well as analyzing the contributions of extension experiences to a critical and socially committed education. This is a qualitative study guided by the theoretical and methodological framework of historical-dialectical materialism, which allows social phenomena to be understood through their historical determinations and contradictions. Data collection was carried out through a focus group and semi-structured interviews with six undergraduate students at each stage of the study, all participants in an extension project at a public university in Northeastern Brazil and enrolled in different health-related and allied fields. The participants’ statements were transcribed and organized into a textual corpus, which was subjected to lexical analysis using the iRaMuTeQ software, enabling the identification of discursive patterns and meaning categories. These results were subsequently analyzed through Bardin’s content analysis framework. The study is expected to contribute to reflections on the limitations of health education within the context of neoliberal rationality, while also highlighting the potential of extension experiences in fostering counter-hegemonic educational practices committed to equity, social justice, and the principles of the SUS.
