SUMMARY:

Introduction: According to the literature, adolescence is a period of transitions that brings new responsibilities, such as greater autonomy and the development of emotional and financial independence and, biologically, changes in the 'biological clocks' responsible for regulating the sleep-wake cycle (SWC). In this context, it is essential to understand which non-pharmacological strategies and interventions contribute to improving sleep in adolescents, including health education actions to improve sleep hygiene, such as providing guidance on changing inappropriate patterns, avoiding the consumption of substances such as nicotine, caffeine and alcohol, and reducing activities that impair sleep before bedtime, such as the use of screens and intense physical exercise. Objective: With this in mind, this study aims to develop a prevention and intervention study for sleep disorders in adolescence, materialized in a prevention and intervention manual for sleep disorders. Method: This is a qualitative-quantitative study using the integrated method of knowledge translation (CT). The setting for the study was the Federal Institute of Rio Grande do Norte (IFRN) in the municipality of Santa Cruz/RN. The research subjects were 11 adolescents in their second year of high school, 5 of whom were subsequently selected, as well as their respective parents. In addition, 3 teachers and 3 sleep specialists also took part in the research. The Involvement Matrix (IM) was used as a systematized tool to facilitate the participants' engagement in decision-making and distribution of roles in the research. Preliminary results: Profile of participants - 80% female, 50% over 18 years old. The initial questionnaire revealed that all the adolescents (11) who took part said that they used electronic devices before going to bed. In addition, ten of the eleven participants reported occasional difficulties falling asleep and sleeping in class, especially in the early hours of the morning shift. Seven adolescents said they woke up during the night, with the majority reporting waking up 1 or 2 times, as well as stating that their quality of sleep during the week was 'very poor', while only four reported the same for weekends, corresponding to an average of 4.45 (±1.24) during the week and 6.42 (±1.81) at weekends. Four adolescents mentioned using some form of medication or supplement, such as melatonin and vitamins. Finally, ten of the eleven adolescents said they had no knowledge of sleep disorders. After analyzing the answers and according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 05 adolescents were selected and consequently their respective parents. The second questionnaire was then administered to the adolescents, and the sleep inventory was also administered to family members who agreed to take part in the research. The teachers reported observing signs of sleepiness in the classroom, such as lack of concentration, irritability and excessive tiredness. The adolescents' guardians also participated and reported concern about the amount of time their children spend on electronic activities at night, but little familiarity with sleep hygiene or with practices that can help regulate the sleep-wake cycle. Preliminary conclusions: The preliminary results suggest the importance of participatory interventions in improving adolescents' sleep quality.
