This dissertation investigates the relationships among art, memory, ancestry, and anti-racist education in the school context. The research was conducted within the Artemancipa Theatre Club, developed at Escola Estadual de Tempo Integral José Augusto and Escola Estadual Padre Edmund Kagerer, both located in Caicó, in the Seridó region of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. The study is based on the understanding that schools are spaces in which narratives are contested and where different histories, cultures, and identities may either be silenced or valued. Its objective was to understand how theatrical and performative practices can contribute to Black agency, the deconstruction of racist stereotypes, and the appreciation of Afro-Indigenous cultures present in the local territory. The investigation was grounded in Arts-Based Research and a/r/tography, integrating the roles of artist, teacher, and researcher. Creative processes, oral accounts, theatrical experiences, and memories produced within the school environment were considered. The study engaged with authors such as Rita Irwin, Elliot Eisner, Augusto Boal, John Dewey, Jorge Larrosa, and Richard Schechner, understanding art as experience, knowledge, and a possibility for social transformation. It also established connections with Abdias do Nascimento’s Black Experimental Theatre and with the performances of the Irmandade dos Negros do Rosário in the Seridó region, interpreting these manifestations as territories of memory, resistance, and ancestry. From a decolonial perspective, the effects of the coloniality of knowledge and power on the school curriculum were discussed in dialogue with Frantz Fanon, Walter Mignolo, Kabengele Munanga, Nilma Lino Gomes, Cida Bento, Silvio Almeida, Ailton Krenak, Leda Maria Martins, and Conceição Evaristo. The writing also assumed an autobiographical dimension, inspired by the concept of escrevivência, by revisiting family memories and understanding the body as an archive of experiences and ancestral knowledge. The results demonstrate that theatre and art, when connected to an intercultural and anti-racist perspective, strengthen a sense of belonging, value historically marginalized narratives, and contribute to the construction of a more democratic and pluralistic school.
