The study of foreign languages involves the constant elaboration, application and correction of knowledge assessments. In this context, the use of computerized tests has brought advantages to make these tasks easier. Through studies in the areas of knowledge assessment in foreign languages and automation of these evaluations, the present research aims to develop a methodology to automate the evaluation of knowledge acquisition in the Japanese language that does not require much interaction with a professional language teacher and is not limited to a fixed content of the language, i.e. can be applied using any Japanese study material. The results include the research and development steps of the Automatic Vocabulary Improvement Test methodology and the construction of the Nihongo Kotoba Shiken tool, which consists of an application of the method which can be used in a real context of language study. It will be presented the steps of conception of the methodology, application in a computational tool and evaluations with a language professional and Japanese study class in a real context of teaching.
