BIG AREA: Ciências da Saúde
AREA: Farmácia
SUMMARY:

Introduction: Patient safety (PS) was included in the global health agenda following the significant repercussions of the publication of the report To Err Is Human: Building a Safer Health System, which showed that many PS issues could be avoided. Therefore, incorporating PS education into the training of future health professionals, alongside the development of communication and teamwork skills, is crucial for enhancing the quality of care and PS. Objective: Design and implement an educational module on communication and teamwork for pharmacy students interning in the clinical analysis laboratory of a university hospital. Method: This qualitative action research study was conducted in the clinical analysis laboratory of a university hospital in northeastern Brazil. This hospital serves as a training ground for fourth-year undergraduate pharmacy students. The study was conducted in three stages: 1) situational diagnosis, 2) educational intervention, and 3) evaluation. An Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) was used to evaluate skills. Debriefing and semi-structured interviews with participants were conducted to evaluate the proposal. Results: The situational diagnosis analysis revealed gaps in the Pharmacy course's PPC at UFRN regarding the inclusion of patient safety, communication, and teamwork. The educational module, developed and implemented based on the WHO Multiprofessional Curriculum Guide and SASP, used active learning methodologies, such as case studies, simulations, debriefings, and OSCE, to promote meaningful learning and student engagement. Results showed that participants perceived improvements in communication, leadership, and teamwork skills, as well as increased awareness of safe practices in the clinical analysis laboratory. Final Considerations: The implemented educational module was effective in developing communication and teamwork skills among pharmacy students, thereby strengthening patient safety in a laboratory context. Integrating active methodologies, critical reflection, and practical assessment enabled students to internalize essential concepts and skills for professional practice. The results suggest that systematically incorporating patient safety content into pharmacy curricula is essential for training professionals who are more aware, critical, and prepared to work in complex healthcare contexts.
