SUMMARY:

Introduction: Healthcare-associated infections are frequent incidents and a serious public health problem, as they increase costs, length of hospital stay, and morbidity and mortality, negatively impacting the quality of health services. It is evident that the prevention of primary bloodstream infections associated with the central venous catheter is closely related to the implementation of evidence-based measures, such as adherence to bundles of good insertion practices and the optimization of device maintenance practices, as well as interventions aimed at facilitating teamwork and safety culture. Objectives: to evaluate the implementation of a continuous improvement cycle for the prevention of primary bloodstream infection in patients with central venous catheters in an Intensive Care Unit in the Northeast. Method: quantitative research with a quasi-experimental design, of the before-after type, of a single group, using the implementation of a continuous improvement cycle, developed from September 2023 to July 2024, at the Giselda Trigueiro Hospital, in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, through seven (07) steps: 1) Identification of the opportunity for improvement; 2) Analysis of opportunities for change; 3) Selection of criteria for quality evaluation; 4) Construction of educational activity; 5) Quality assessment before educational intervention; 6) Implementation of the educational intervention and 7) Measurement of effectiveness after the implemented improvement cycle. The study was carried out with 39 professionals who provided care to critical patients in the Intensive Care Unit, respecting the ethical principles recommended for research carried out with human beings. Results: The development of the seven stages highlighted the role of the multidisciplinary team in the construction of the intervention itself in the face of identified and prioritized non-conformities; An action plan was designed considering a scoping review and the team's preferences for learning; there was a significant improvement after the educational intervention, with a reduction in non-conformities in four of the twelve items verified. Conclusion: The improvement cycle proved to be effective for the prevention of primary bloodstream infection in patients with central venous catheters. This study was important for the strengthening and implementation of teaching practices that provide professionals with the opportunity to reflect on their care actions, motivating them to reduce existing non-conformities, to organize a work process capable of being monitored, discussed and improved in order to reduce infection rates.
