This study investigates the work of Oswaldo Câmara de Souza (1904–1995) during his tenure representing the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Directorate in Rio Grande do Norte (DPHAN-RN) between 1961 and 1974, to understand a policy of heritage designation driven by him. This time frame was drawn in due to the period in which Oswaldo Câmara de Souza joined DPHAN-RN, in 1961, and the year of retirement as a state representative. The patrimonial services began, there were a series of material asset seizures in the State in an unseen way in previous or subsequent administrations that of Oswaldo de Souza. This leads us to the understanding that mapping, inventorying and recording was a work in tune with the patrimonial policies of this period, which focused most of their attention on material goods. In theoretical-historiographical terms, we work with the relationship between memory, heritage and identity. Methodologically, we analyzed the reports sent by Oswaldo de Souza to DPHAN, the instruction processes of the listed assets and the newspapers of the period that transmitted information about the listings to the general public, and also the exchanges of correspondence between Oswaldo de Souza and DPHAN.
