SUMMARY:

The objective of this research is to analyze the experience of vocational education through the concept of traumatized memory space. Comprised of the Ginásios Vocacionais (Vocational Gymnasiums) and the Serviço de Ensino Vocacional (Vocational Education Service), this system was developed in the State of São Paulo during the 1960s (1961–1970), encompassing six units: one in the capital and others in the countryside cities of Americana, Batatais, Barretos, Rio Claro, and São Caetano do Sul. The study analyzes the historical narratives elaborated on this experience, as well as primary documentation, to understand to what extent the end imposed by the Military State affected memory and the making sense of the past. Documentary analysis was conducted on sources from CEDIC (PUC-SP), newspaper and magazine articles from the Hemeroteca Digital, and military proceedings against vocational education available at the National Archives. Testimonies and other sources from the analyzed historiography were also used. The research discusses the pedagogical practices of these schools and their underlying philosophy, highlighting the works of four philosophers: Henrique Lima Vaz, Teilhard de Chardin, Emmanuel Mounier, and Karl Marx. Through the concept of traumatized memory space, it is perceived that the attribution of a consistent philosophy to vocational education was done a posteriori, as a result of the historical trauma corresponding to its forced closure. Furthermore, it analyzes historical narratives regarding the origins, development, and crises faced by the agents of this system. Using primary documentation, the study confronts the selection of facts, their transformation into historical facts, and the implications for the constitution of sense. Finally, it examines the events surrounding the end of the experience (1968–1969). Primary documentation concerning the installation of the Pluricurriculares and the military processes reveals disputes over the hegemony of pedagogical renewal in São Paulo, suggesting that this also influenced the termination of the vocational system. It concludes that the history of this experience is permeated by a traumatized memory space, requiring the elaboration of loss through historical mourning and bereavement.
