SUMMARY:

In this chapter, it became clear how statistics play an ambiguous role when referring to tragic events that erupt in the course of history, because even though they help to quantify calamities, they often ignore the structural inequalities of different human groups. Therefore, analyzing the bodily consequences of the 1877-1879 drought from the perspective of social class is essential. By emphasizing individuality, bourgeois society creates diverse experiences according to the social position of individuals, manifesting itself in their very bodies and defining their vulnerabilities in times of crisis. Although used to denounce the imposed social suffering, the images constructed by literary, journalistic, and photographic narratives about the drought refugees of 1877-1879 reinforced stereotypes, contributing to a social identity fabrication that takes the signs of misery and backwardness as the foundations of its portrait. In the second part of the chapter, the main medical conceptions disseminated about the illness of bodies were presented, as well as the smallpox epidemic in the city of Fortaleza in 1878 and its impact on the corporealities of the migrants present in that space. In A fome (1890), Teófilo uses metaphors to describe the epidemic’s development, resorting to a warlike-military discourse to exemplify the spread of the disease among city dwellers and those living in makeshift camps, portraying the city as a body that needs to be protected against the virus. In the novel, the physiological impacts of the disease on the body are meticulously described, representing the social exclusion of those afflicted by smallpox, especially among the poorest. Through his literary work, the pharmacist-writer sought not only to recount the epidemic but, above all, to educate about the disease, making his book a vehicle for political and social awareness for the reading public, detailing the symptoms and treatments available during that historical period.
