Ademar Vidal; Spaces; History; Paraíba; Intellectual
This research proposes to analyze the historical works of the intellectual from Paraíba, Ademar Vidal, from 1920 to 1950, based on the understanding that he was a historian of spaces, composing historical narratives that spatialized, in particular, Paraíba. Thus, we seek to problematize spatial categories in his texts through a historical approach. Ademar Vidal was a man of multiple roles, considering his investment in the legal field after graduating in Law from the Recife Faculty, he actively participated in the local and national press, with emphasis on periodicals such as Era Nova, A União, Diário de Pernambuco (Diários Associados), and O Jornal (Diários Associados, RJ), and contributed to intellectual institutions like the Historical and Geographical Institute of Paraíba (IHGP), where he held the position of president. Additionally, he highlighted the field of folkloric studies in the 1940s as a privileged setting for his studies. Vidal's writings have as central themes cultural, social, and political studies, with an emphasis on Paraíba, which is characterized in his narratives as divided into three spatialities: coast, brejo/várzea, and sertão. In this way, spatial categories are part of his approach to understanding the whole. Vidal's historiography also stemmed from these spatial uses, reinforcing his role as a historian of spaces, the main focus of this research. The temporal cut used marks the period of the subject's greatest investment in the intellectual scene, consistently publishing in local and national circulation periodicals, especially through the Diários Associados, as well as the relationships developed with other intellectuals such as Luís da Câmara Cascudo, Gilberto Freyre, and Mário de Andrade. Vidal's circulation in intellectual networks is investigated through passive correspondences sent to Mário de Andrade (1920-1940) and Cascudo (1940-1980). Regarding Gilberto Freyre, I investigate it from mentions made in periodicals and the choice of topics privileged by the interaction between the Paraíba native and the Pernambuco intellectual. Thus, for the development of this research, I use a set of bibliographic sources, correspondences, unpublished works, and publications in periodicals, made available by the following institutions: periodicals from the Digital Hemeroteca, at IHGP, Era Nova, and Novela Fundação Casa de José Américo, letters from Vidal to Cascudo at Ludovicus, and the correspondences to Mário de Andrade located at the Brazilian Studies Institute (IEB-USP).
