SUMMARY:

This thesis discusses the elaboration of literary landscapes of the sertão of Northeast - considered from the point of view of their materiality as space, but also as a symbolic, historically elaborated cutout - in recent works of horror and terror literature. The work of Márcio Benjamin (February 23, 1980, Natal/RN), a writer known for setting his narratives of this genre in the aforementioned spatial cutout, is analyzed in particular. The objective of this research is, therefore, to analyze the elaboration of backlands landscapes in such narratives, scrutinizing the relationship between the empirical real and the fictional unusual present in the aforementioned literary genre. The sources used are the works Maldito Sertão (2012); Fome (2016); Agouro (2019) and Sina (2022), in addition to interviews with Márcio Benjamin and promotional materials of his participation in literary events and projects, used to investigate his sociability networks (SIRINELLI, 2003). A semi-structured interview conducted directly with the writer is also used, in which some aspects of his trajectory and work are explored in depth. The methodological operations to analyze this set of sources are readings and records anchored in the theoretical framework of Cultural History, especially regarding the relations between History and Literature (CHARTIER, 1988; COMPAGNON, 1999; JAKOBSON, 1990; MESCHONNIC, 2022; PESAVENTO, 2000; 2013; SEVCENKO, 1983), as well as the concept of landscape (BESSE, 2014; COLLOT, 2013; NAXARA, 2018; PINHEIRO, 2020), also giving attention to discursive aspects (FOUCAULT, 1996). Therefore, it is expected that, in the end, it will be possible to make relevant notes concerning the images propagated about the sertão of Northeast in literature, considering continuities and ruptures in relation to the way in which national literature has presented the spatial cut in question.
