SUMMARY:

This doctoral thesis investigates the life and work of writer Horacio de Almeida. More specifically, this study challenges the biographic spaces of Horacio de Almeida, which means the memory value of his intellectual activities with a particular focus on his forgetting relationship with Spiritism. Amidst his versatile intellectual performance, we will analyse spaces of memory and forgetfulness written by and about him. Therefore, the object of this doctoral thesis centres on the disconnection between his real life and biographical narratives, especially those concerned with the author's involvement with Spiritism, where silence and oblivion pervade. This study’s main goal is to understand how Horacio de Almeida incorporated his Spiritist studies into his intellectual work and how his biography included his religious choice. To analyse this relationship between memory and forgetfulness in what is understood as biographic spaces, we will draw on the ideas of Leonor Arfuch (2010), Aleida Assmann (2011), Andreas Huyssen (2000, 2014a, 2014b) and Paul Ricoeur (2007). These authors have distinct theoretical frameworks; nonetheless, they agree that spaces are more than physical places and constitute essential parts where one creates identity and memory. In this sense, the idea of biographic spaces enables us to comprehend the complexity of human nature from the tension between remembrance and oblivion, between what was lived by one and what was written about him. This investigation methodology comprised analysis of texts written by Horacio de Almeida, especially those concerned with Spiritism, and the review of other published materials released in books and newspapers, which entailed his political and historical trajectories. The main findings have identified that the relevant engagement of Almeida to Spiritism was considerably minimised or ignored by and in most of his biographic narratives, regardless of his significant role in Spiritism. Therefore, these results emphasise the importance of reassessing his intellectual contribution from this new perspective. Moreover, this investigation has shown that including Spiritism in the analysis of his works will provide a more elaborate understanding of the author’s influence on the history and culture of Paraiba, in addition to unfolding new research opportunities at the intersection of religion and intellectuality in Brazil.
