"IT IS THE BRAZILIAN WOMAN WHO IS THE LIVING HOPE OF THE RESURRECTION OF THE FATHERLAND": CATHOLIC JOURNALISM AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF SPACES OF POWER BY THE ARCHDIOCESE OF OLINDA AND RECIFE (1935-1940)
Revista Maria; Archdiocese of Olinda and Recife; Good Press; Alfredo Xavier Pedrosa; Pious Union of the Daughters of Mary.
The Revista Maria, the object and source of the research, belonged to ‘Boa Imprensa' and was inserted in the scope of women's organizations. Our aim is to understand how the Revista Maria was instrumentalized by the Archdiocese of Olinda and Recife, in the time frame from 1935 to 1940, to produce a social space that distributed a standard of gender and religiosity for women, based on the interests of the religious institution. Thus, we seek to perceive the suitability of a discourse on culture, politics and religiosity for the female audience and to analyze its intellectual role in the construction of a feminine conservatism, taking into account the influence of the leaders of the re-Catholicization, as well as the relationship between the Catholic Church and the State in the period. The editions of the Revista Maria will be examined as the main source, taking into account the reflections of Tania de Lucas on working with this type of document. We also highlight the theoretical contributions of Yi-Fu Tuan, who understands space based on the experiences that formulate its constructs, denaturalizing the construction of space by the Catholic Church. And of Pierre Bourdieu on habitus, realizing that the social position of individuals influences the establishment of their points of view. Also of Renato Peixoto and Candido Rodrigues, who research the Catholic Church and its political interests using periodicals, which support the discussions on this analysis. This work attempts to analyze the Revista Maria taking into account its political and religious agendas, perceiving religiosity as a guide in the construction of social molds for Catholic women.
