SUMMARY:
This thesis has as its object of study the relationship between Potiguar Freemasonry and the Provincial Assembly of Rio Grande do Norte, in the period 1867-1875, in which these institutions were spaces used by the elites of the province, in the defense of their interests and for the consolidation of its power in these territories. The objective is to analyze the political and social relations of the members of the elite of the province, in order to understand how this appropriation of power spaces in the province happened and if this appropriation generated transformations in the potiguar territory. The analysis is based on theoretical concepts that explain how political relations occurred in the Empire of Brazil, such as clientelism, hegemony, sociability, enlightenment, centralism and autonomy, with the assumption that both institutions as social and power spaces, were subject to disputes and articulations of local political groups and related to imperial policy. To this end, based on a framework of documentary sources, periodicals, speeches, reports and letters from provincial presidents, imperial and provincial laws, as well as Masonic documents and newspapers, it is intended to analyze and understand how this relationship between the Masonic organization and politics during the Empire of Brazil.
