A Rio Grande do Norte to be taught: the trajectory of the teaching of History of Rio Grande do Norte (1892-1952)

ABSTRACT The present study aims to investigate the contribution of Rio Grande do Norte’s History as an academic subject in Rio Grande do Norte’s schools during the First Brazilian Republic, with the intention of identifying the transformations e continuities on the matter during this brief republican experience. The purpose is to understand how the subject had been approached on schools in the formative process of the new citizens in the context of the republican ideology. In this sense, this work aims to identify the main topics, the created educational material and how teachers, as well primary and secondary students, received this theme. Therefore, the sources for this research are the program’s content and topics, the Provincial Presidents’ speeches, and the reports made by the directors of state’s department of education. The study uses the idea of school culture, curriculum and school subject as Dominique Julia, Ivor Goodson and André Chervel proposed, respectively, for its theoretical basis. These conceptions will be operationalized aiming to understand the logic behind the continuity of the referred subject on school’s program during that period. About the method, this work will be divided in three chapters. In the first chapter I’ll write about when the politicians recognized the importance about teach the local history; In the second chapter I will deal with what images were transmitted about the state; Finally, I will deal with how this school subject should be taught in the perspectives of the social actors involved
