SUMMARY:

Urban heat islands are phenomena resulting from local climate changes driven by urbanization; they are particularly evident in thermal patterns and reflect the specific characteristics of the urban climate. Against this backdrop, we consider the school's social role in providing elements that enable students to build their identity and a sense of belonging to the local community, thereby bridging the gap between science and the local context in which the students live. Thus, the central objective of this study is to analyze the approach to teaching climatology through the urban heat island phenomenon and how this phenomenon is perceived by elementary school students; to this end, the methodological strategy is divided into two stages: an analysis of the textbooks used by 5th-grade students at a municipal school in the southern zone of Natal (RN), and a second stage involving a pedagogical intervention with teachers and 5th-grade students from that same school.Regarding the analysis of textbooks, books from various subjects were selected—natural sciences, general science, geography, history, humanities, and mathematics—totaling ten analyzed books; of these, content regarding "heat islands" was found in only five, concentrated in the humanities and natural sciences, with none found in mathematics. The results indicate that, although the theoretical elements necessary to understand the formation and consequences of heat islands are present in the books, they appear in a fragmented manner. The pedagogical intervention with students will involve the use of playful and inquiry-based activities, as well as questionnaires, with these proposed activities being validated beforehand by the school's teachers.
