SUMMARY:

Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) is an oilseed crop of growing interest for biofuel production and cultivation in the Brazilian semi-arid region; however, its slow initial establishment in the field limits its agricultural viability. At the same time, the transition toward more sustainable practices stimulates the search for bio-inputs, highlighting the biostimulant potential of microalgae. This study aimed to evaluate the scientific landscape of safflower's physiological responses under abiotic stresses and to analyze the biostimulant potential of extracts from the microalgae Scenedesmus obliquus and Arthrospira maxima, applied individually and combined (blend), on the germination and initial growth of safflower seedlings of the cultivar IMAMT PI100. Methodologically, a bibliometric review based on the PRISMA protocol (from 2000 to 2025) and laboratory experiments were conducted. The trials integrated germination tests on paper rolls and initial development in pots, using a substrate that resembles the semi-arid region (Oxisol and vermiculite, 1:1 v/v). Data were subjected to Tukey, Kruskal-Wallis, PERMANOVA, and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) statistical tests. The bibliometric review revealed a predominance of studies applied to agriculture starting in 2020, mostly in Iran, focusing on water and salt stresses as the most tested. In the biological germination experiments, all treatments influenced the physiological response, with the blend at the lowest concentrations (15% and 30%) promoting the best germination rates (96%) and germination speed index (51.65), respectively. However, the 45% blend dose caused a severe inhibitory effect. In pot growth, the S. obliquus extract did not promote significant changes in the seedlings. On the other hand, the individual application of A. maxima was the most effective treatment, promoting significant increases in fresh mass and root system length at all evaluated doses, driven by its biochemical profile rich in phytohormones. This beneficial effect disappeared when combining the species in pots, generating a dose-dependent antagonism on dry mass. It is possible to conclude that the biostimulant potential of microalgae on safflower depends on the species, concentration, and application method, with isolated A. maxima being the most promising alternative for the crop's initial establishment in the semi-arid region.
