SUMMARY:

The oil crisis of the 1970s and, later, episodes of energy supply instability, such as the 2001 blackout in Brazil, highlighted the vulnerability of energy systems based on conventional sources, especially hydroelectric power, which predominates in the country. This context spurred the development of public policies to diversify and make the national energy matrix more resilient, with a focus on encouraging renewable sources such as wind power. The Alternative Energy Sources Incentive Program (PROINFA), implemented in 2002, was a landmark, fostering the rapid expansion of wind farms, particularly in the Northeast, given its exceptional anemometric conditions. Currently, Brazil is consolidating its position as a world leader in wind generation, and the semi-arid region of Rio Grande do Norte stands out as one of the main hubs of this growth. Although wind power is recognized for its benefits in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and diversifying the electricity grid, its implementation in sensitive regions requires an in-depth analysis of the resulting environmental and social impacts. Landscape changes, vegetation removal, impacts on wildlife, pressure on traditional communities, and land-use conflicts are among the main challenges observed in the semiarid region of the Northeast, highlighting the need to reconcile the energy transition with socio-environmental sustainability. This study aims to assess the impacts of wind energy on the environmental quality of the semiarid region of Rio Grande do Norte, adopting an interdisciplinary approach. The study reinforces the importance of policies that combine the expansion of renewable sources with ecosystem conservation and respect for local communities, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 7, 13, and 15). By advancing our understanding of the impacts of wind energy in the semiarid region, we contribute to the development of truly fair and sustainable energy transition strategies.
