RESUMO:

The mangabeira (Hancornia speciosa Gomes), is an arboreal plant which belongs to the Apocynaceae family. It has great social, economic and cultural importance in the Northeast Region of Brazil. As the species remains wild, exploitation of its resources is still extractive. The species finds difficulty to be produced by nurserymen and propagated for silvicultural cultivation. The mangaba fruits are usually harvested immature, causing the immaturity of the seeds they contain. However, seeds taken from fruits stored until full maturation have the same germinative power as seeds collected from mature harvested fruits. Mangaba fruits were obtained in a street market in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, on March 15, 2017. They were then conditioned to mature for five days in plastic bags, protected from light and ambient temperature. The seeds were emptied in tap water with the aid of a sieve. The seeds of the control group (A) had the pulp adhered to the tegument completely removed by this method. The seeds were, then, submitted to the following treatments: removal of the pulp with the aid of sand (B); subjected to chemical scarification by sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) for five minutes (C); by sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) for five minutes (D) and; by sodium hypochlorite, followed by sodium bicarbonate, both for two minutes (E). The experimental design was completely randomized, at factor 4 x 25. Bags of black polyethylene seedlings containing soil sand were used. The irrigations and counts of emerged seedlings continued until the 40th day. The total number of emerged seedlings (NE), the percentage of emerged seedlings (PE), the mean seedling emergence time (TME) and the seedling emergence rate (IVE) were determined for the results. The results were evaluated using R-Statistics by the Snedecor F test at 1% probability and by the Dunnett test at 95% confidence level. The highest values for NE, PE and IVE were reached by treatment A. This work leads to the conclusion that the best treatment to promote the emergence of mangaba seedlings is the removal of the pulp adhered to the seeds with the help of tap water.
