AREA: Enfermagem
SUMMARY:

Introduction: Fibromyalgia is a syndrome characterized by generalized pain, fatigue,
and sleep and emotional disturbances, which predominantly affects women between 22
and 55 years of age. The diagnosis is clinical (anamnesis and palpation of tender points)

and the treatment is multidisciplinary, and integrates pharmacological and non-
pharmacological interventions such as physiotherapy, psychology and acupuncture and

their modalities. Among the acupuncture modalities, craniopuncture stands out as a
promising intervention for the symptomatological control of the disease, as it acts on
reflex areas of the cerebral cortex, helps in the treatment of chronic pain, neurological
pathologies and functional disorders. Objective: to evaluate the effects of craniopuncture
on the variables pain, symptoms of depression and impacts on the quality of life of people
with fibromyalgia. Method: This is a randomized clinical trial where initially, a
craniopuncture protocol for fibromyalgia was built and validated. Subsequently, an
intervention using the craniopuncture technique was performed in people with
fibromyalgia. The study site was the Laboratory of Integrative and Complementary
Practices of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte. Data collection took place
between June and November 2026, using the following instruments: sociodemographic
questionnaire, visual analog scale, fibromyalgia impact questionnaire, Beck depression
inventory. The data were stored in an Excel spreadsheet, version 2019. Ethical aspects:
The trial was registered on the Brazilian Registry of Clinical Trials platform and
conducted in accordance with the Consolidated Standards for Clinical Trials. The ethical
principles of research involving human beings were respected, according to resolution
466/12. Main results: Seven judges participated in the protocol validation process, who
have a predominantly male profile, aged between 50 and 59 years, in the area of nursing
and pharmacy, with master's or doctoral degrees and work both in care and teaching and
with about 3 to 15 years of experience in the area of acupuncture. The protocol achieved
a Global Content Validity Index of 0.87 and satisfactory individual indices (≥ 0.85).
Regarding the intervention study, 68 participants participated in the study, being allocated
to the control group (n=34) and the experimental group (n=34). The sociodemographic
profile of the sample was characterized by a large majority of females (95.59%), between
40 and 49 years old, with higher education (36.76%) and without a partner (51.47%),
income below one minimum wage (27.94%), although most of them are active in the
labor market (35.29%) or on medical leave (33.82%), time of diagnosis of up to 5 years
(58.82%), prevalence of comorbidities (66.18%) and continuous use of medications
(91.18%). Pain analysis revealed a significant intragroup reduction in both groups, with
an advantage for EG, which reinforces the potential of craniopuncture. The analysis of
depressive symptoms evidenced the positive impact of craniopuncture on the reduction
of depressive symptoms. The EG presented a large effect size, which indicates a superior
clinical efficacy of this approach. Regarding the overall impact of fibromyalgia, a
significant clinical improvement was observed in both groups, with no clinical superiority
between the techniques used. Conclusion: Craniopuncture proved to be a safe, validated
and highly clinically effective intervention, especially in pain control and in the reduction
of depressive symptoms in people with fibromyalgia. In addition, as a specialty for nurses,
the technique expands the therapeutic resources of nursing. Derivations of the Work:

The study resulted in the publication of the article "Effects of acupuncture on the signs
and symptoms of people with rheumatic diseases: A scoping review" and technical
product "Craniopuncture protocol for the management of painful conditions and
depressive symptoms in people with Fibromyalgia. Social Impact: Offering
craniopuncture as a non-drug, safe and low-cost therapy that reduces pain, depression in
fibromyalgia. With high potential for implementation in public health, the technique
democratizes access to treatment, restoring autonomy and quality of life to patients, while
consolidating the role of nursing in the application of evidence-based integrative
practices.
