SUMMARY:

Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease with high prevalence,
characterized by the need for continuous treatment adherence, frequent blood glucose
monitoring, and proper self-care practices, particularly regarding insulin administration.
The complexity of insulin therapy, combined with a lack of knowledge about insulin
types, dosages, injection techniques, and storage, can compromise treatment safety,
increase the risk of complications, and negatively affect the quality of life of adults with
diabetes. This research aims to develop and validate an e-book as an information and
communication technology targeted at adults with diabetes mellitus, in order to support
knowledge about insulin use and promote safe and effective self-care. This is a
methodological study structured in three main stages: (1) scoping review, including the
collection and analysis of scientific articles, guidelines, manuals, and updated books to
identify gaps and difficulties in insulin management; (2) e-book construction, including
language adaptation, inclusion of illustrations, and layout design of the pilot material by
a professional graphic designer, following the Assessment of Printed Educational
Materials focused on Health Literacy for Brazil recommendations regarding content,
language, layout, learning stimulation, and cultural appropriateness; and (3) content and
appearance validation, conducted with four participant groups: specialists,
multiprofessional healthcare teams, graduate students, and patients over 18 years old with
diabetes mellitus using insulin. The recommended number of participants is between five
and twenty specialists. The Content Validity Index, Kappa coefficient, and Appearance
Validity Index will be used, with descriptive statistical analysis of means and percentages.
The project will be submitted to the Research Ethics Committee of Federal University of
Rio Grande do Norte, in accordance with Resolution No. 466/12 of the National Health
Council. It is expected that the developed e-book will increase knowledge among adults
with diabetes mellitus, strengthen self-care, enhance safety in insulin administration, and
contribute to the implementation of digital health education strategies, providing support
for future research, public health policies, and interventions aimed at preventing
complications, ensuring safe disease management, and improving the quality of life of
this population.
