SUMMARY:

Nipple–areolar lesions (NAL) are defined as the presence of skin changes affecting the
nipple. These lesions are mainly caused by improper latch of the newborn to the breast,
leading to the interruption of exclusive breastfeeding, which provides the best possible
nutrition for the infant. In this context, educational technologies based on scientific
evidence represent relevant strategies for promoting self-care and strengthening
breastfeeding practices. Accordingly, this study aimed to validate an educational booklet
on the prevention and treatment of nipple–areolar lesions in lactating women. This was a
methodological study grounded in the ADDIE instructional design model, encompassing
the phases of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. During the
analysis phase, the educational needs of the target audience were identified, and a review
of the scientific literature was conducted. The design and development phases involved
content development, definition of language, and visual organization. Content validation
was carried out by expert nurses using the Delphi method in two rounds, applying the
Content Validity Index. The implementation phase consisted of applying the booklet to
the target population. The evaluation included usability analysis using the System
Usability Scale and qualitative appraisal by users regarding the clarity and adequacy of
the material. The results demonstrated satisfactory consensus among the experts
regarding content validity after the proposed revisions, as well as high acceptability and
excellent usability of the booklet among participants. The educational technology was
considered clear, understandable, functional, and appropriate to the needs of lactating
women, highlighting its potential to support health education actions and nursing care.
The educational booklet developed, grounded in the ADDIE model, constitutes a
validated, evidence-based technology with the potential to contribute to the prevention
and treatment of nipple–areolar lesions and to the promotion of breastfeeding.
