SUMMARY:

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of music in reducing stress and anxiety during
the first chemotherapy session in breast cancer patients. Method: This is a randomized,
controlled, double-blind clinical trial to be conducted according to the Consolidated
Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) guidelines. The study will be conducted in
the outpatient department of the Advanced Oncology Center (CECAN) of the Northern
Riograndense League Against Cancer, with a probabilistic sample of 74 patients,
equally divided into the following groups: Control Group (CG) and Experimental Group
(EG). Randomization will be ensured using the "Research Randomizer" website. The
control group will consist of breast cancer patients undergoing their first neoadjuvant
chemotherapy session, receiving standard care and headphones without music during
chemotherapy administration. The experimental group, in turn, will consist of the same
group of patients mentioned above, but will receive the musical intervention through
headphones. A form will be used to collect sociodemographic data, and another form
will be used to collect clinical data, including comorbidities, cancer stage, duration of
diagnosis, medications currently being used, and vital signs. Two scales will also be
administered: the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) to assess anxiety levels and the
Perceived Stress Scale-10 (PSS-10) to assess stress levels. This study will be submitted
to the ComPEx collegiate body for project evaluation and then to the Research Ethics
Committee of the Northern Rio Grandense League for approval and initiation of data
collection after qualification. This research can expand the possibilities of care in the
oncology setting by investigating a simple, accessible intervention that focuses on the
subjective needs of the person undergoing treatment. By exploring the effects of music
as a therapeutic resource, research can encourage more sensitive and integrative
practices, in addition to generating scientific evidence applicable to the realities of
healthcare services and the daily lives of professionals and patients.
