SUMMARY:

This thesis investigates the shared responsibility that arises in various contexts of social coexistence and argues that it results in duties related to the formation, maintenance, and revision of what we believe, in line with the tradition of studies on the ethics of belief. Due to its structuring role in thought and its implications for action, it is argued that belief should not be understood merely as a personal opinion or a conviction belonging to the private sphere, but as an element with direct effects on collective life. In complex societies, characterized by a high division of labor and by the necessity of relying on experts, the quality of the beliefs that guide our positions and justifications becomes a condition for tolerance, social cooperation, and responsible participation in public deliberation. Recent phenomena such as the spread of false information, the intensification of polarization, and the diffusion of conspiracy theories demonstrate that belief formation, if not handled with the care required by changes in scale and social complexity, can lead to significant social problems, with clear effects in the political sphere. Drawing on the tradition of the ethics of belief and on theoretical contributions regarding the public sphere and mutual understanding, the thesis maintains that responsibility for belief formation and maintenance does not stem solely from normative commitments inherited from traditional ethical views, but also from the very conditions of political coexistence. Finally, the thesis includes an empirical investigation carried out through the Fala.BR platform, which suggests the absence of systematic initiatives in the federal education system aimed at cultivating a responsible process of belief formation. This diagnosis indicates a significant educational gap, which reinforces the difficulties of public debate and society’s vulnerability to disinformation.
