This dissertation aim to explain what means the State from the works of Marx and Engels. According to these authors, the institution has undergone several transformations since its creation, however, what all forms of State have in common is the aspect of instrument of opression of the ruling class. Just like the social classes, the State did not aways exist or exist forever, it is an institution thats corresponds to a certain degree of development of social producion capacity. The conflict between the productive forces and the way in which society organizes itself to produce and reproduce the means of life is reflected in class struggles and the creation and extinction of social institutions. In order to understand what the state means for the creators of scientific socialism, our research investigates the emergence of the institution, the relationship between state and ideology and the transition to the dictatorship of the proletariat and the end of the state from the assumptions of dialectical materialism.

The word “ideology” was created at the end of the eighteenth century by the French philosopher Destutt de Tracy and initially referred to the study of ideas. However, in the following years, its meaning underwent changes, and when Marx and Engels learned the term, its current use already had another meaning: an abstract, metaphysical thought, which is distant from reality. It is in this sense that the two revolutionary thinkers initially began to use it in their writings. Yet, we might find in his works other meanings to the word “ideology”: illusion, inverted consciousness, false consciousness, or set of ideas, always linked to the bourgeois class, which dominates politically. This work deals with the meanings of the term “ideology” from the Marxist perspective; how it is propagated throughout society; and its relationship with institutions, thinking, and the State. Furthermore, the dialectical character of the institutions and the importance of the dispute of ideas are highlighted, being the ideas both linked to the emancipation of the working class and the end of class society a counterpoint to the dominant ideology.

The aim of this research is to outline a critic-analytic reconstruction of the reception of the concept of necropolitics in Brazil. To this end, I will address the concept of necropolitics starting from a preliminary investigation which I call excavation. This preliminary investigation consists in a detailed analysis of the debates revolving around the concept of biopolitics in Michel Foucault and Giorgio Agamben, as well as of Hannah Arendt’s discussion about race, racism and imperialism. Then, I will elucidate Achille Mbembe’s notion of necropolitics and I will focus on the paradoxical status of the innovative features of this political strategy. While in the past the State was the main responsible for shaping the spheres of life and death and for dealing with them, nowadays life and death are not managed by solid, fixed and stable groups, but by different groups across different social spheres. This means that it is not just the State who kills. Free-fighters, militias and paramilitary groups are examples of this new political arrangement, which Mbembe calls necropower and which places itself inside/outside power as it is conventionally known, conceived and normatized. Necropower both produces new worlds of death and extends the right to kill with inconditional voracity. Lastly, I will examine the reception of the concept of necropolitics within the contemporary Brazilian landscape, emphasizing the different features of the contemporary analytic contributions in our country. Against this background, I will claim that whiteness and the identitary categories specified as branquitude and branquidade are constitutive of the dynamic character of the ceaseless production of deaths of determinate people and social groups prompted by the State and by non-official powers. Within this framework, killing - either literally, psychologically or symbolically - became entertainment and routine. In the face of this extermination machinery, we need both to produce new critical questions and to find new answers and strategies that break with neo-colonialism and neo-imperialism. To this aim, we need to rethink and rediscuss the meanings of politics in the XXI century.

The present dissertation has as its direct object of investigation the intertwining between the theory of madness and sexual love in Arthur Schopenhauer's metaphysics. This examination takes place, especially, from readings of the second volume of The World as Will and as Representation (1844), especially chapter 32, which deals with Madness, and chapter 44, entitled The Metaphysics of Sexual Love. The proposed intersection between madness and sexual love concerns the clashes that the imperative desires of the Will - represented in the structure of nature by the sexual impulse - have with human rationality, regarding the dissonant interests between nature's determining will (the interest of the species) and the human rationalized will. In this sense, the clash between these two interests gives rise to the possibility of madness as a fission point present in this conflict, since madness, here, will be the activity that aims to solve a possible damage to the individual, as the exercise of the Will to live. This conflict is presented from the perspective that the metaphysical idea of sexual love, in the field of representation, is an artifice used by the Will to deceive man and objectify his untimely will. In synthesis, the proposal of the action of madness in sexual love will be carried out in relation to the possible problems that the effectuation of the sexual impulse may encounter on its way to the finality of falling in love.

The objective of this work is to present the notion of happy life in Seneca the Younger. To achieve this objective will be considered the reflections of Seneca encountered in the follow books: The Happy Life (De Vita Beata), Moral Epistles (Epistulae Morales ad Lucilium). One of the important elements of this discussion is the idea that happiness is encountered in each individual and not in the things, material goods and in the other people. Another important premise is self-confidence as the foundation of happiness, as Seneca maintains. The acknowledgement of what are vices and virtues completes the argumentation and will be central in this line. The idea that the human must act conforms to your self nature also is fundamental for comprehending what Seneca considers as happiness. In secondary form, it will be analyzed the atemporality of the concept of happiness, as defined by the philosopher. Atemporality is understood as something that never loses its validity. The actuality materializes from the moment that the revelation of Seneca's ideas about happiness becomes emergent. When one proposes a atemporality of Seneca's ideas, one does not mean that these ideas are in full use at our time, however, a question is proposed: is there a demand today for this way of experiencing happiness?

One of the main arguments used against theism – the belief in a perfectly powerful and good God – is the so-called problem of evil. Over the centuries, philosophers exposed the problem in multiple ways, but no definitive logical solution could be reached. Recently, a discussion has been reignited within contemporary analytic philosophy. In the 1970s, the most formidable candidate for the “ultimate logical solution” in favor of theism emerged – namely, Alvin Plantinga's modal-logic proposal, known as the “Free will Defense”, according to which it is possible to demonstrate the logical compatibility between God and evil. If these two elements can be shown to logically coexist, then the problem of evil, at least its logical version, dissolves and the theistic concept of God becomes immune to this kind of objection. It should be noted that, although Plantinga's proposal did not have the same theological pretensions as the traditional Augustinian theodicy, for example, it is also based on free will as an essential component in solving the logical problem of evil. Indeed, Plantinga's proposal does not constitute a theodicy – it is not intended to discover God's reason for permitting evil and justifying it. His argument is restricted to the satisfaction of criteria of formal logic. It is the general objective of this research to investigate the logical problem of evil, as stated and defended by its main exponents, and to inquire Plantinga's answer to it. And, since Plantinga's proposal is quite complex – mainly due to the sophisticated use of modal logic and the semantics of possible worlds –, there is, whenever possible, an effort towards clarify the terminology. This research will address the topic as follows. First, a brief history of the discussion of evil is provided, and some preliminary definitions are given. Then, Plantinga's answer to the logical problem of evil is presented, in two parts: (1) his commitments to demonstrate that “the charge of inconsistency”, leveled against theism, is false; and (2) his defense that the theistic conception of God is, in fact, logically consistent with the presence of evil in the world. Finally, a brief evaluation of the presented topics. This research values the hermeneutic, descriptive and analytical elements and does not intend to be exhaustive.

Can we identify points of convergence between the oppressions of class, race and gender? Based on the intersectional studies of Brazilian philosopher Lélia Gonzalez, we seek to analyse triple oppression, a reinterpretation of the concept of triple discrimination proposed by the thinker. Our aim is to analyse the connections between these three oppressions, while at the same time uncovering the essence of this complex phenomenon. In our view, the concept points to a strategy that prevents us from overcoming the structures of the capitalist system: the naturalisation of oppressions through the establishment of an abstract universal rationalism. We base our investigation on his work Springtime for the Black Roses, a compilation of articles covering writings from the 1970s to the 1990s. Using an analytical approach, we seek not only to explain and interpret the author's theses, but also to establish dialogues with other feminist, Marxian and decolonial thinkers, opting for a tripartite structure of chapters to capture the intertwining of class (chapter 1), race (chapter 2) and gender (chapter 3). To do this, we first discuss the process of marginalisation of black bodies, as one of the most exploited commodities for primitive accumulation in territories with unequal and combined development; then we show how the myth of racial democracy has been used to mask over-exploitation and create the "natural place" of black people; Finally, we highlight how the myth of racial democracy has been used to create the "natural place" of black people.

This work aims to investigate the contribution of modern art, along with the experience of avant-garde movements at the turn of the 20th century, to the political theory of the French strategist Guy Debord. We start from the hypothesis that to understand the critique of late capitalism expressed by the author in his concept of "spectacle", as presented in his most influential book, The Society of the Spectacle (1967), it is imperative to understand his critique of culture, which was one of his main focuses during his years at the head of Situationist International (SI). Considering this, we analyze Guy Debord's passage through Letrism and Lettrist International to demonstrate the background of the discussions that gave rise to the notions of dérive, psychogeography, détournement, and construction of situations—essential for the creation of SI. From this, we examine the criticism of culture in the second half of the 20th century, set out in the founding document of Situationist International, Report on the Construction of Situations (1957), to understand how the experiences of Surrealism and Dadaism, as well as the stage of man's technical development over nature and the movement towards the destruction of artistic forms, were essential to the notion of “transcendence of art” defended by Debord and his companions. Finally, we demonstrate how the analysis of the avant-garde as a form of artistic and political organization, as well as the use of détournement as a method of action that goes beyond its application as an artistic tool, enables the resumption of the revolutionary claims present in the avant-garde practice at the turn of the 20th century, thus developing a way of putting back into action a demand for the direct use of life, already enunciated by the historical avant-garde.

The aim of this Master's thesis is to investigate the relationship between the concepts of work, rationality, and technology in Herbert Marcuse's work between 1928 and 1964, with the ultimate aim of contextualizing the critique of technology in One-Dimensional Man. To this end, relevant works from three different moments in this period were selected. Firstly, we investigate the role of the notion of labor both in Marcuse's re-reading of Heideggerian phenomenology, which he intended to use to complement Marxism, and in his own ontological conception of labor. Secondly, it is shown how, after joining the Institute for Social Research, there is a rationalist turn in Marcuse's thinking. The second chapter of this work aims to show how Marcuse set rationality as a parameter for a social organization aimed at human fulfillment, without, however, failing to criticize some of its developments and assumptions. In this context, Marcuse writes his first critique of technology, which is analyzed in this dissertation alongside his critique of rationality and some excerpts from Marx on the development of industry. In the third chapter, labor, rationality, and technology converge in Marcuse's analysis of one-dimensional society. The aim is to show how, in Marcuse's work, the ambiguity of technology and its effects on labor are directly related to the ambiguity of rationality itself. Finally, it presents some of the solutions proposed by Marcuse to bring together the realms of necessity and freedom. In the light of the research, the aim is to contribute to the current debates on the subject, particularly those postulated by Andrew Feenberg and John Abromeit.

On this paper we are about to take in-depth look into the concept of Reasonable Pluralism and its implications on the political and ethical thinking of John Rawls. For Rawls, Reasonable Pluralism it’s a confirmation of a societal structure that has multitude of world views, that usually antagonize and compete with one another. For him Reasonable Pluralism is presupposed in modern society as a whole, as it is particularly important to democracy and to the institutions that take care about freedom of association. And by presupposed, the author acknowledges the any propositions about the principles of justice or social cooperation, and even about public policies, that all of this should be taken into consideration if the matter is justice. The Reasonable Pluralism explains that morality is very devised between people in society, it comes into all sorts of beliefs, philosophy, religion. The question is that society is diverse, and it is important that politics could include everyone in it besides their own personal values. To be able to handle the problems that come with Plurality in the construction of a justice in a society, John Rawls feels the urge to revisit his theory, the theory of Justice as Equity. He now uses the concept of Justice as Politics and not anymore as Justice as something intrinsically moral. By that he changes the whole structure of his work to give a new perspective on his concept of Justice as Equity, he understands Pluralism as big part of the democratic society, especially through the optics of reason and liberty.

The antagonism between reason and instinct is at the core of the criticism that the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche leveled against Socrates. Nietzsche saw in him the authority behind an innovative movement that was responsible for leading the Greeks from an artistic culture, where instincts prevailed, to a new culture based on rational principles. Socrates, according to Nietzsche, founded a revolutionary form of reflection within Greek culture and among young Athenians, in which logical principles were the key to understanding reality, confirmed by his eloquent argumentative ability. The Socrates presented by Nietzsche is an ambivalent figure: a character capable of great achievements but, due to his excessively logical nature and declared opposition to instincts, a monstrosity per defectum, as stated in The Birth of Tragedy.

The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze, from a feminist and anti-capitalist framework, gender: the conditions surrounding its emergence and historical transformations, its central characteristics today (understanding that gender is structured/determined in conjunction with capitalism) and, finally, debate the premises of its resolution (that is, paths for its dissolution as a form of social hierarchization). Thus, hoping to conduct a feminist reflection that does not refrain from calling for the end of all forms of oppression and exploitation. This investigation begins with an analysis of theoretical perspectives on the origins of the gender, encompassing the anthropological discussion on the gendered division of humanity, as well as the conjunctural elements of its historical development (including colonialism, the capitalist mode of production and transformations in the family). Then, from feminism, a discussion is held, highlighting contributions of Marxist feminism (in particular, from the Social Reproduction Theory), to establish the central elements of gender, as well as the critical aspects articulated in the concepts of gender and patriarchy. Finally, some theoretical approaches on the end of gender oppression (and even gender itself) are analyzed, focusing on the relationship between this project, which has a feminist horizon, and the communist revolutionary project, that is, overcoming capital. This work aims, as a whole, to contribute to the understanding of gender oppression and encourage critical reflections on the relationship between gender and class in capitalists societies.

The present research aims to reflect about the Absurdity, central concept of the philosophical essay The Myth of Sisyphus: Essay on the Absurd (1942), in dialogue with the narrative essays from his youth, The Other Side and the Right (1937) and Marriage in Tipasa (1939), works by the French-Algerian philosopher Albert Camus (1913-1960). Camus’ philosophy is marked by the limitation of reason in apprehending reality, restricting itself to describing appearances, changes, and movements of the Becoming. The image is designated for the representation of the rational obstacle, functioning as an argumentative resource in order to build the philosophical concept, through successive images that illustrate the transitoriness of reality. In this way, the concept of the Absurd is formed from the imagetic representations that illustrate the negative condition of human existence. The images refer to the ways that the Absurd affects the human being. First, in the sensible form called "feeling of Absurdity", then in the intellectual form, named "notion of Absurdity", a Camus’ expression that denotes the concept of Absurdity. Finally, the paper moves towards the analysis of the narrative essays of youth in the light of the Absurd, in order to unveil the presence of the concept since the first writings of Albert Camus, indicating the conceptual link between the analyzed essays.

What is the meaning of life? How do our daily actions impart sense and expressiveness to our lives? This classic question is explored from the perspective of philosopher Susan Wolf, who contends that actions motivated by love are essential for a significant life. However, not just any love-driven acts matter, but only those directed towards what is worthy of love. Despite the compelling nature of this idea, it poses a significant axiological challenge: how to determine what is worthy of being loved? The aim of this research is to elucidate Wolf's thesis and reinterpret it through the specific axiological lens of Argentine philosopher Risieri Frondizi. The text begins with an analysis of Wolf's theory and progresses to examining various axiological strands, culminating in the adoption of Frondizi's approach, which is then applied to the final interpretation of Wolf's answer to the question of life's meaning.

This thesis addresses the topics of recognition and culture from the character of the Recognizer (Erkennende) in the works of Nietzsche. The main goal is to put into evidence how, in Nietzsche, there is a central character, although not sufficiently explored in the literature, of the Recognizer (Erkennende)—who philosophically articulates recognizing and experience in culture. In order to achieve this goal, the thesis is divided into three chapters. The first chapter deals with the epistemology of recognizing, starting from the division of levels of knowledge in Kant and passing through Schopenhauer's critique of Kantian epistemology, showing how knowledge as knowing and recognizing has a vital importance in Nietzsche. Recognition is knowing made alive. Second chapter deals with the figure of the Recognizer in Nietzsche's work, analyzing passages from his early studies on Democritus, his Tragic Period and, finally, his mature works. The third and final chapter is dedicated to formulating the central thesis on how the Recognizer articulates knowledge and life and to what extent he acts as a physician of culture.

The purpose of this research is to make explicit the conceptual triad of autarchy (autárkeia), freedom (eleuthería) and friendship (philía) which, when articulated, makes possible an ethical interpretation of Epicurus' thought about human relations in molecular communities. The investigation begins with a general introduction about Epicurus' ethics, the scope and possibilities of this ethics, establishing relationships between the primary textual sources - namely, Letter to Herodotus, Letter to Pythocles, and Letter to Menoeceus, in addition to the Principal Docrtines, the Vatican Sayings and, finally, the fragments of the Peri Phýseos (On Nature) of Epicurus. In a second moment, the purpose here is to present the basic notions that appear in the remaining texts of Epicurus as basic notions helping to define the concept of human relations. The contexture of these concepts will serve to demonstrate what kind of human relationships can be assessed in these molecular communities and how they differ from the worn-out human relationships of the decadent polis. A third moment consists of showing how human relations are possible within Epicurus' philosophical community, through the definition of what Epicurus' philosophical molecular communities were, as well as showing how, within these, such human relations are made viable and possible. From this conceptual web of human relations, we will seek to tread a new path for understanding the way of life in the community of the Garden (Képos).

In his phenomenological deconstruction (Destruktion) of medieval ontology, often associated with late Scholasticism, Heidegger restricts the metaphysics of being in Thomas Aquinas to effective reality. Heidegger interprets the thomistic act of being (actus essendi) as the transition from a mere potential being to its actuality, which determines the distinction between essence and existence, delineating the ontological constitution between what an entity is (essentia) and its mode of simply being given (Vorhandenheit). This thesis seeks to analyze whether this distinction, which equates being and entity in an ontic real effectiveness, applies to being (esse) in Thomas Aquinas as Heidegger understood it in his task of phenomenological deconstruction of traditional ontology. In his fundamental ontology, aimed at a return to the original sources of the question of the meaning of being that has fallen into oblivion due to the ontological difference as a symptom of Western metaphysics, Heidegger points to Thomas Aquinas as one of the main propagators of this concealment. However, this reference is made to the extent that Heidegger considers the metaphysics of Suarez as a hermeneutical key to the phenomenological analysis of Thomas Aquinas' thought

In this thesys, we aim to defend the proposition that Technoprogressive Transhumanism, as formulated by James Hughes and David Wood, has the potential to cultivate a new metanarrative. This metanarrative may provide a framework for envisaging solutions to the numerous atrocities culminating in existential risk. Transhumanism is not a singular, all-encompassing philosophical, cultural, political, and social movement. The subdivisions primarily arise due to the political nuances guiding each submovement. Alongside Technoprogressive Transhumanism, there is Extropianism, established by Max More and entrenched in neoliberalism, as well as UpWingers, founded by FM-2030 – or his former name, Fereidon Esfandiary – presenting an alternative political vision to the traditional right-left dichotomy. We critique Extropianism for being grounded in the failed foundations of post-2008 neoliberalism and for its inconsistency in adopting a life-affirming philosophy based on the recurring practice of austerity. We argue that, while transhumanism has its roots in humanism, its propositions surpass it. Despite the benefits humanism provided by introducing the concept of the human and its associated dignity, rights, and prerogatives, thus liberating us from dependence on the divine, the movement also initiated processes of dehumanization. Consequently, it falls to Technoprogressive Transhumanism to propose a utopian scenario wherein an end to the suffering of humans and other animals is envisaged through the use of technology, an extension of our nature, and an optimistic philosophy of life affirmation.

The Turing Test, developed by Alan Turing as “the imitation game” in his paper Computing Machinery and Intelligence (1950), brought to light the discussion about the (im)possibility of thinking and intelligent digital machines. After its publication, the Turing Test has been the subject of countless criticisms and objections. One of the most relevant objections to this test is The Chinese Room Argument, which was developed by the North-American philosopher John Searle in his paper Minds, Brains, and Programs (1980), aiming to refute what he calls Strong Artificial Intelligence, as well as the Turing Test itself. This text intends to revisit the Turing Test, as well as the Chinese Room Argument, and to provide an analysis of the concept of intelligence in the context of the Turing Test, from the following issue: “How does Turing understand the concept of intelligence within his test? Is it human intelligence (called here genuine intelligence), or is it some other type of intelligence (whatever that intelligence may be)?” As research results, it is argued that 1) It is possible to interpret the Turing Test as not being developed to assess whether the digital computer involved possesses genuine (human) intelligence or not, but rather to evaluate if it can be considered intelligent in the sense of what is here called Turing-intelligence; 2) the Turing Test is not necessarily committed to Strong Artificial Intelligence; 3) the Chinese Room Argument does not always challenge the Turing Test; 4) the Turing Test is possible, i.e., achievable in practice, as long as it undergoes some modifications, resulting in a new version of the test, which is here denominated the Ideal Turing Test; 5) Chat-GPT is an example of an AI system capable of passing the Ideal Turing Test and, consquentely, being classified as Turing-intelligent. With such results, as a conclusion of the research and as a response to the previously stated question, the TT can be interpreted in such a way as to support the hypothesis that passing such a test is a sufficient condition for an AI system to possess not genuine intelligence, but rather another type of intelligence, namely Turing-intelligence.
