SUMMARY:

In this thesis we analyze the understanding of the human being elaborated by the French thinker François VI, Duke of La Rochefoucauld (1613-1680). La Rochefoucauld was part of the philosophical and literary movement that became known as the “French moralists”, which brings together thinkers from the 17th to the 19th centuries who dedicated themselves to analyzing the subjectivity and the behavior of the human being. In the first chapter we present the main characteristics of the French moralist movement and contextualize La Rochefoucauld's philosophy in a historical-cultural and biographical way, since his thought was closely related to his life. Still in the first chapter, we address the influence of Christian morality – especially Augustinism – on La Rochefoucauld and analyze the extent to which his moral philosophy can be considered Christian or secular. In the second chapter we analyze La Rochefoucauld's physiopsychological approach to human beings, highlighting the way in which he explained subjective phenomena based on physiological factors. We also address his way of thinking about the spirit [esprit] and the heart [cœur] as the two basic dimensions of the human psyche and how the heart dominates the spirit. The heart is the seat of passions, a topic that La Rochefoucauld investigates in depth. The study of passions underlies his analysis of the moral phenomenon that manifests itself mainly in the problematization that La Rochefoucauld carries out around what his contemporaries considered as vices or virtues. For him, vices and virtues are always mixed and can act concomitantly within man. Next, we analyze the notion of self-love as the main motivation for human action and how this concept is articulated with the other elements of La Rochefoucauld's thought. Finally, we argue that although the critical tone predominates in La Rochefoucauld's work, there is a propositional part in his thought centered on the practice of sincerity, the search for an authentic life and the defense of a warrior-inspired ethic of self-affirmation, topics covered in the third and final chapter.
