SUMMARY:

This study analyzed land use and land cover dynamics and the environmental changes that occurred in the Itans Irrigation Perimeter, located in the municipality of Caicó, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, with emphasis on vegetation cover, surface water extent, and soil conditions. The study integrated remote sensing, geoprocessing, fieldwork, and laboratory analyses of soil samples. Soil profiles were also characterized, and changes in land use and land cover between 1985 and 2024 were analyzed. The results revealed landscape changes, including the expansion of pasture areas, the reduction of Caatinga vegetation, and a decrease in surface water extent during certain periods. These changes may be associated with the interaction among climate variability, water availability, and anthropogenic activities. Regarding the soils, 93.27% of the samples showed low electrical conductivity values, indicating that, under the conditions analyzed, no salinization process was identified in the irrigation perimeter. The analysis of the soil profiles demonstrated the influence of drainage conditions, landscape position, soil physical and chemical characteristics, and management practices on their limitations and potential uses. It is concluded that environmental degradation in the Itans Irrigation Perimeter results from the combined action of different factors, including changes in land use and land cover, climate variability, drainage limitations, water infrastructure conditions, and management practices. The results contribute to the environmental understanding of the area and may support monitoring actions, territorial planning, soil conservation, and the sustainable use of natural resources.
