SUMMARY:
The Semiarid Continental Shelf of Brazil (SCSB), located on the eastern margin of the Brazilian continental shelf, constitutes an exceptional environment regarding its
supply dynamics and sedimentological nature. Based on this premise, the objective of this study is to map and classify the large-scale bedforms present on the SCSB,
followed by a spatiotemporal analysis of their mobility behavior. For this purpose, remote sensing techniques were applied within a GIS environment using orbital
imagery obtained from the Landsat 5, 7, 8, and 9 and Sentinel 2 satellites, integrated with primary (in situ) and secondary bathymetric data derived from smooth sheets.
In total, seven bedform classes were identified: transverse sand waves, linguoid-crested sand waves, networked sand waves, wide smooth sand ribbons, narrow smooth
sand ribbons, rippled sand ribbons, and isolated sand bodies. For this research, the SCSB was compartmentalized into four major sectors: the Macau Sector, the
Jaguaribe Sector, the Mundaú Sector, and the Coreaú Sector. It was observed that the distribution of these classes across the four sectors exhibits a heterogeneous
pattern, demonstrating that formation processes across the study area—and within each sector—operate in distinct ways and to varying degrees. This specific
characteristic consequently influences the mobility of these bedforms, either promoting or preventing its occurrence. Ultimately, it was concluded that the SCSB displays
a heterogeneous distribution of bedforms across its sectors, resulting from variations among the conditioning variables in their formation and migration processes.
