SUMMARY:

The Rio Piranhas-Seridó Domain, the central-northeastern portion of the Borborema Province, documents important episodes of a long and complex geomorphological evolution, derived from major tectonic events such as the Brasiliano Cycle and Cretaceous reactivations. These events were responsible for the generation of extensive shear zones and fault and fracture systems, which condition the geomorphological evolution, marked by control over Cenozoic denudational processes. In this perspective, the Santana Massif stands out in the central portion of the State of Rio Grande do Norte, being particularly noteworthy for presenting strong evidence of tectonic, magmatic, and paleoclimatic events in its formation. The methodology used to prepare this work consisted of a broad bibliographic review on the genesis and geomorphological evolution of the northern portion of the Borborema Province, with emphasis on lithostructural aspects, aiming at a regional interpretation, in addition to cartographic surveys, the use of morphometric parameters and indices to analyze the relief, and fieldwork. Preliminary results indicated that the geomorphological configuration of the Santana Massif is strongly conditioned by factors such as the presence of an extensive sedimentary capping associated with the Serra do Martins Formation, which contributes to the geomorphological maintenance of its subsurface, currently demarcating an aggradational paleosurface; the presence of dikes and plugs associated with the Ceará-Mirim and Macau volcanism, which cut through the valleys and part of the sandstone capping, affecting the sedimentary cover in its eastern portion, thus evidencing a complex tectonomagmatic evolution; and the trend of NNE-SSW oriented structural lineaments, which section its basement and exert an important influence on the control of the drainage network and, consequently, on the Quaternary dissection and deposition.
