PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF TEACHERS WHO TEACH NATURAL SCIENCES: PRACTICES TO DECREASE ZOOCHAUVINISM

The interconnection of living beings is extremely important for the maintenance of life on planet Earth. To this end, it is necessary to take action to combat zoochauvinism, which refers to excessive attention and interest in animals, especially humans, in environmental studies and activities. In order to contribute to this problem, we have developed an Educational Product in the form of a teacher training course so that teachers who teach Natural Sciences can develop less zoochauvinistic practices. From an ecological perspective and with a focus on education for sustainability, we propose the course “What if we were more ecological educators?” Thus, this research sought to investigate the contribution of a teacher training course to the professional development of teachers who teach Natural Sciences with a view to reducing zoochauvinism. Taking into account its nature as an educational intervention, we methodologically framed the research as qualitative and participatory in nature. For data construction, the procedures and instruments used to monitor the intervention and data collection process were recordings of the proposed activities, as well as textual productions carried out by the participants, teachers who teach Natural Sciences, mostly in the early years of Elementary School, and future teachers. For data analysis, we used Narrative Analysis, an analysis method that interposes empirical material and theoretical references narratively. Based on the dimensions of professional development of Science teachers, the results of the research indicate that there was a significant contribution of the teacher training course to the participating teachers. It was possible to identify that the proposed training context created favorable conditions for the professional development of teachers in dimensions such as updating scientific knowledge, updating pedagogical knowledge, organization and conduct of teaching, support of student learning and participation in social responsibility.
