SUMMARY:

This dissertation investigates the historical trajectory of Monsignor Ausônio Tércio de Araújo between 1953 and 2015, analyzing his work as an educator and intellectual in the sertão region of Seridó, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. The research addresses how his educational background and his involvement with various institutions contributed to the development of educational projects, the circulation of ideas, and the formation of intellectual sociability networks in the region. It draws upon the fields of the History of Intellectuals, History of Education, Social History, and the History of the Sertões, engaging primarily with authors such as Jean-François Sirinelli, Gizele Zanotto, Eric Hobsbawm, Hebe Castro, Giovanni Levi, Philippe Artières, Antonio Carlos Robert Moraes, and Durval Muniz de Albuquerque Júnior, among others. The study approaches the sertões as historical categories and spaces where knowledge is produced, rejecting interpretations that reduce them to territories of isolation or backwardness. Methodologically, the research employs both quantitative and qualitative approaches, utilizing bibliographic and documentary research as well as oral history. Documentary sources are primarily drawn from the Padre Tércio Memorial collection, comprising personal documents, correspondence, speeches, certificates, institutional records, photographs, newspaper clippings, and materials produced by the Caicó Rural Education Broadcasting Station, alongside documents regarding his work in educational institutions and the State Council of Education. Semi-structured interviews were also conducted with individuals who had personal experiences with the priest; their testimonies provided insight into the multiple representations formed regarding his work. The organization and interpretation of sources were carried out using the Content Analysis method proposed by Laurence Bardin (1977), enabling the identification of analytical categories related to intellectual mediation, sociability networks, educational practices, and the construction of memory. The results demonstrate that Monsignor Ausônio Tércio de Araújo transcended the boundaries of his religious role, establishing himself as an intellectual and educator committed to the expansion of education, communication, and civic development in the Seridó hinterlands. His trajectory reveals the creation of extensive institutional and intellectual networks—linking the Church, schools, universities, media outlets, and educational policies—thereby helping to reaffirm the hinterlands as spaces for knowledge production, the circulation of ideas, and the development of projects aimed at social transformation.
