SUMMARY:

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a prevalent condition with complex diagnoses. The lack of standardized and cross-culturally adapted instruments limits their identification and comparability in epidemiological studies. This study aims to translate and cross-culturally adapt the Epidemiological Diagnostic Instrument for Temporomandibular Disorders (EDI/TMD) into English. This cross-cultural adaptation study will be conducted according to Beaton's methodology and the recommendations of COSMIN (Consensus-based Standards for the Selection of Health Measurement Instruments). It will be developed in five stages: translation, synthesis of translations, back-translation, expert panel, and pre-testing. The pre-testing stage will recruit 40 participants (with and without TMD) through community-based advertisements. The eligibility criteria will be: Individuals of both genders and ethnicities, over 18 years of age, with sufficient capacity to respond to the EDI/TMD and Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD) instruments, and who are American nationals. After the initial eligibility screening, potential participants will undergo a clinical examination to confirm their TMD status using the DC/TMD. Data will be analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), version 22.0. Descriptive analyses will be performed to characterize the sample and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) to verify structural validity. Reliability will be assessed using the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) and Kappa coefficient, and internal consistency will be assessed using Cronbach's alpha (≥ 0.70). The Standard Error of Measurement (SEM) and Minimum Detectable Change (MDC) will be calculated. Construct validity will be verified using Spearman's correlation with a previously validated instrument in English. The English version of the IDE/TMD is expected to exhibit high internal consistency, good reliability, and structural validity consistent with the original model. International validation will expand its applicability in epidemiological studies, in addition to acting as a reliable clinical tool for the early diagnosis of TMD.
